JIS Office Chair Standard

Admin October 10, 2026

The JIS office chair standards mainly include JIS S 1032 and JIS S 1206:2013. Here is a detailed introduction:

JIS S 1032

  • Scope of Application: This standard applies to a variety of products used in office settings, including swivel chairs, non-swivel chairs, folding chairs, and stools. This means that whether it is a common office swivel chair or a simpler folding chair, they all need to comply with the relevant requirements of this standard to ensure safety and reliability in the office environment.
  • Core Regulatory Requirements
    • Stability Testing: Clear requirements are set for the stability of different types of chairs. For example, in the front stability and side stability tests for armless chairs, when a 600N vertical force and a 20N horizontal force are applied to the seat surface, the chair must not tip over. In the rear stability test, when a 600N vertical force is applied to the seat surface and an 80 - 120N horizontal force is applied to the backrest, the chair must also not tip over. These regulations aim to ensure that the chair remains stable under normal use and possible external forces, preventing users from being injured due to chair tipping.
    • Impact Testing: It includes multiple test items. For seat impact, a 180mm free-fall is used (140mm for folding chairs, repeated 10 times). For backrest impact, a 210mm height impact hammer is used for striking, repeated 10 times. For armrest impact, a 210mm height impact is applied, repeated 10 times. There is also an overall drop test, where the chair is dropped from a specified height 10 times. Through these tests, the durability and structural integrity of the chair under impact can be evaluated.
    • Surface Treatment Testing: It covers normal-temperature liquid resistance tests (such as acetic acid, ammonia water, etc.), coating adhesion tests (the cross-cut method), and rust resistance tests (saltwater immersion for 100 hours). These tests ensure that the chair surface has good anti-corrosion and anti-wear properties, extending the service life of the chair.
  • Revised Version Situation: The revised version of the JIS impact test for office chairs in Japan updates the safety performance evaluation methods. It expands the test scope to include the evaluation of components such as armrests, backrests, and gas springs. The impact test equipment and requirements are more standardized, with an increase in test frequency and cycle times. The gas spring test adds performance evaluations under extreme conditions, and the strength tests for armrests and backrests are also strengthened.

JIS S 1206:2013

It specifies the testing methods for the stability, strength, and durability of office chairs in office furniture, covering basic requirements for testing, test equipment, test procedures, and result determination. It provides detailed descriptions of test conditions to ensure that the testing process is standardized and repeatable. At the same time, it clarifies the technical indicators for different test items, providing a basis for the quality control of office chairs and is applicable to the design, manufacturing, and quality evaluation processes of office chairs.
