Jiaozhou Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 16, 2026

In 2009, a tragic incident occurred in Jiaozhou, Shandong, where a teenager died due to the explosion of a low-quality pneumatic office chair, fundamentally caused by severe quality issues with the gas spring inside the chair.

Direct Cause of the Explosion: Composition and Structural Defects of Low-Quality Gas Springs

The primary culprit behind the explosion was the low-quality gas spring in the chair. A proper gas spring should be filled with high-purity nitrogen, utilizing nitrogen's chemical inertness to prevent internal oxidation and combustion. However, some unscrupulous manufacturers, aiming to reduce costs, substitute high-pressure air or low-purity nitrogen for pure nitrogen, resulting in the introduction of oxygen into the gas spring. When users adjust the chair's height, the intense friction between the piston and the inner wall of the gas spring generates heat, which may ignite the lubricating oil (usually flammable hydraulic oil). The presence of oxygen exacerbates the combustion reaction, ultimately leading to an explosion.

Furthermore, the materials and craftsmanship of low-quality gas springs are severely flawed. Insufficient wall thickness or the use of inferior metal materials makes them prone to cracks or deformation under prolonged pressure. When users frequently adjust the chair's height, the stress on the wall exceeds its limit, causing rapid crack propagation and structural failure of the gas spring. This results in the sudden release of high-pressure gas inside, creating an explosive impact.

Consequences of the Explosion: Mechanisms of Fatal Injuries

When a pneumatic chair explodes, the top rod (the core component of the gas spring) is ejected at extremely high speed. In the Jiaozhou incident, the top rod penetrated the teenager's buttocks and directly damaged major blood vessels (such as the iliac and femoral arteries) and internal organs. Rupture of major blood vessels leads to massive blood loss in a short period, and without timely hemostasis and blood transfusion, the patient can quickly die from hemorrhagic shock. Additionally, the impact force of the top rod may cause compound injuries such as pelvic fractures and intestinal perforations, further aggravating the condition.

Preventive Measures: Selection and Usage Recommendations

To avoid similar tragedies, consumers should prioritize purchasing pneumatic chairs that have passed international safety certifications (such as BIFMA and SGS) and check for anti-explosion stamps or safety markings on the surface of the gas spring. Avoid frequent height adjustments during use to reduce mechanical wear on the gas spring; regularly inspect the appearance of the gas spring, and if any wall depressions, air leaks, or stuttering during adjustment are detected, immediately stop using and replace it.
