Japan Office Chair Testing

Admin October 09, 2026

Japan office chair testing is primarily based on the JIS S 1032 and JIS B 7921 standards, covering various aspects such as stability, strength, durability, impact performance, and surface treatment. It requires testing by professional laboratories and submission of compliance documents.

I. Core Testing Standards and Content

  1. JIS S 1032 Standard

    • Stability Testing: Specific requirements are set for different types of chairs. For example, for front and side stability of armless chairs, a vertical force of 600N and a horizontal force of 20N are applied to the seat surface. For rear stability, a vertical force of 600N is applied to the seat surface and a horizontal force of 80-120N is applied to the backrest, with the requirement that the chair does not tip over.
    • Impact Testing: Includes seat surface (180mm free fall, 140mm for folding chairs, repeated 10 times), backrest (210mm height impact hammer strike, repeated 10 times), armrest (210mm height impact, repeated 10 times), and overall drop testing (dropped from a specified height 10 times). The revised version further expands the evaluation of components such as armrests, backrests, and gas cylinders, with improved standardization of testing equipment and an increase in the number of cycles.
    • Surface Treatment Testing: Covers resistance to normal-temperature liquids (such as acetic acid and ammonia), coating adhesion (cross-cut method), and rust resistance (saltwater immersion for 100 hours), ensuring material corrosion resistance and surface quality.
  2. JIS B 7921 Standard

    • Backrest Push Testing: Evaluates the durability and structural stability of the chair backrest. The chair is mounted on a test platform using a fixing device, and a mechanical push arm applies periodic force to a specific area of the backrest, recording changes in the state of connectors and adjustment mechanisms, typically requiring tens of thousands of cycles.

II. Compliance Operation Procedures

  1. Product Classification and Scope Confirmation: Clearly define the type of chair (swivel chair, fixed chair, folding chair, or stool) and its structural form to ensure that the testing items cover the product characteristics.
  2. Select a Certified Laboratory: Prioritize third-party institutions with ISO 17025 accreditation to ensure that the testing covers the stability, durability, and impact items of JIS S 1032.
  3. Prepare Test Samples: Provide 1-2 sets of fully assembled final sales version samples, with structures consistent with mass-produced products.
  4. Conduct Testing and Obtain Reports: The testing cycle is usually 7-12 working days. After completion, a formal report is obtained, detailing various performance data.
  5. Prepare a Compliance Document Package: Integrate the test report, product specifications, and label information, ensuring consistency before submission as a basis for market access.

III. Testing Significance and Industry Impact

Japan office chair testing standards are known for their strictness, ensuring product safety and durability through systematic evaluation to meet the long-term usage needs of office scenarios. Enterprises need to strictly follow the procedures, controlling quality from design to production to pass certification and enhance market competitiveness.
