Is the Office Chair Reliable?

Admin October 09, 2026

The reliability of an office chair depends on whether the product complies with standards and is used correctly. An office chair that complies with standards and is used correctly is reliable, but there are risks if the product is non-compliant or used improperly.

Compliance Standards Ensure Basic Reliability

In China, office chairs currently adhere to standards such as QB/T 2280 - 2016 Office Furniture - Office Chairs. The industry standards updated in 2025 further strengthen safety design requirements, including anti-slip, anti-tipping, and anti-pinching features, while also enhancing the specifications for the use of eco-friendly materials. The EU's EN 1335 - 2 standard specifies requirements for the structural stability of office chairs and the safety threshold of gas springs. Domestic compliant products must meet equivalent safety indicators. These standards provide a basic guarantee for the reliability of office chairs in terms of design, materials, and safety performance.

Non-compliant Products Pose Potential Risks

Some non-compliant office chairs have multiple safety hazards. In terms of gas springs, they may be filled with nitrogen or high-pressure air of insufficient purity. If the sealing is poor or the material strength is inadequate, explosions can easily occur. According to market supervision inspections in 2025, gas spring safety hazards accounted for 23.3% of the non-compliant batches in the inspections. Regarding structural stability, issues such as base fractures, caster detachment, and insufficient backrest strength can lead to falling risks, with such problems accounting for about 15% in the inspections. In terms of environmental protection, excessive emissions of harmful gases such as formaldehyde and benzene can cause respiratory discomfort with long-term exposure. The new standard in 2025 requires that the emission levels comply with GB 18587 - 2017.

Usage Recommendations to Ensure Reliability

To ensure the reliability of an office chair, prioritize purchasing branded products with quality inspection reports and labeled compliance standards, and avoid low-priced products without quality certificates. During use, regularly check for abnormal noises in the gas spring and whether the base is loose. Avoid frequently and vigorously adjusting the height; do not stand on the chair surface or lean back excessively on the backrest, and ensure that the load does not exceed the maximum load indicated on the product. For ergonomic office chairs, prioritize lumbar and back support. Choose a lumbar support that can fit the curve of the waist and support vertical or horizontal adjustment. Consider the cushion support and seat depth design, and select a cushion with elasticity and support. Confirm the adjustment range and structural stability to ensure a long-term user experience.
