Is the Leather Office Chair Not Breathable?

Admin October 08, 2026

Leather office chairs are not necessarily non-breathable; their breathability varies depending on the material.

Office chairs made of genuine leather generally have relatively good breathability. Genuine leather is a natural material with a unique natural fiber structure that allows air and water vapor to pass through. During prolonged use, air can circulate between the leather fibers, helping to carry away the heat and moisture generated by the body, thus reducing the feeling of stuffiness. For example, in a normal office environment, even after several hours of continuous use, the area where the back contacts the chair will not feel uncomfortable due to stuffiness and can remain relatively dry.

Office chairs made of PU leather, on the other hand, have poor breathability. PU leather is a type of artificial leather, and its manufacturing process and material properties determine that it basically lacks breathability. In summer or in environments with insufficient air conditioning, when a person sits on a PU leather office chair for a long time, the heat and moisture generated by the body cannot be dissipated in a timely manner and will accumulate in the area where the back contacts the chair, leading to back stuffiness and sweating. This situation not only causes discomfort but may also affect work efficiency and mood.

Chairs with a full leather surface have overall breathability shortcomings. Even if the material is genuine leather, if the chair has a full leather surface design, when used in summer or in high-temperature environments, the large area of body contact with the leather can cause heat to accumulate and be difficult to dissipate. Because the full leather surface restricts the range of air circulation, preventing heat from spreading as quickly as it would with local breathability, the parts of the body in contact with the leather will feel increasingly hot, and prolonged use may cause skin discomfort and other issues.

In conclusion, when choosing a leather office chair, if breathability is a priority, it is advisable to consider genuine leather chairs with a non-full leather surface design first. If the budget is limited and a PU leather chair is chosen, attention should be paid to the usage environment, and it is best to use it in a space with a suitable temperature and good ventilation to reduce the feeling of stuffiness.
