IKEA Office Chair Explosion

Admin October 14, 2026

The main reason for the explosion of IKEA office chairs is the substandard quality of the product's pneumatic rods (gas springs), which may specifically involve the following aspects:

Insufficient purity of nitrogen in the pneumatic rod is one of the common causes. Under normal circumstances, the pneumatic rod achieves lifting and lowering functions by being filled with high-purity nitrogen. Nitrogen has a stable chemical property and is not prone to reacting with other substances. However, if the nitrogen purity does not meet the standard during the production process and is mixed with oxygen or other impurity gases, in high-temperature environments (such as prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or being close to heat sources like radiators) or under frequent friction (such as quickly and frequently adjusting the seat height), the gas expands due to heat, and the internal pressure rises sharply, exceeding the limit that the pneumatic rod can bear, which may trigger an explosion.

The material and strength of the container wall of the pneumatic rod are also crucial. High-quality pneumatic rods are usually made of high-strength steel or alloy materials, with a uniformly thick and structurally sturdy container wall that can withstand relatively high pressure. However, some companies, in order to reduce costs, choose materials of inferior quality or reduce the thickness of the container wall, resulting in insufficient strength. When the internal pressure rises, the container wall cannot effectively withstand the pressure and will break or even explode.

The tightness of the seal at the opening should not be overlooked. The opening of the pneumatic rod is responsible for sealing the internal gas and preventing gas leakage. If the opening design is unreasonable or there are defects in the sealing process, such as aging or damage to the sealing ring, loose welding, etc., it will lead to gradual gas leakage and a decline in the performance of the pneumatic rod. At the same time, during the process of pressure changes, the poorly sealed area may become a weak point for pressure release, triggering gas eruption and, in severe cases, causing an explosion.

In addition, some companies, in pursuit of maximizing profits, cut corners on key components and use inferior pneumatic rods. This is the root cause of the explosion of swivel chairs. These inferior pneumatic rods lack strict quality inspection and control during the production process and cannot meet safety standards, posing hidden dangers for use.
