IKEA Office Chair Disassembly
Admin October 11, 2026
Disassembling an IKEA office chair requires following steps precisely. Mastering the correct method allows for efficient completion. Here is a detailed guide:

I. Preparation Before Disassembly
Tool Preparation
- Rubber Mallet: Avoid using a metal hammer to prevent damage to the paint surface or leaving dents. When striking, operate in a circular motion to prevent deformation of the chassis.
- Screwdriver/Turnscrew: Used to remove screws connecting the chassis to the seat.
- Wrench: Loosen fastening nuts. Some models require a hex wrench to remove hex socket screws (such as those for armrests, headrests, or tilt mechanisms).
- Electric Screwdriver (Optional): When there are many screws, using the IKEA FIXA electric screwdriver (with 15 adjustable torque settings) can save effort.
Safety Instructions
- Prioritize using a rubber mallet and avoid direct strikes with metal tools.
- If unfamiliar with the chair's structure, it is recommended to consult the installation manual (PDF format) for that specific model provided on the IKEA official website.
- Forcing disassembly may result in part damage or personal injury. If unsure, seek professional assistance.
II. Detailed Disassembly Steps
Removing the Casters
- Turn the chair upright and grasp the wheels directly with your hands, pulling outward forcefully.
- If the wheels are stuck, use a screwdriver or hex wrench to grip the edge of the wheel, lay the chair horizontally, and then use both hands to clamp the wheel from above and below, with the lower hand pushing downward forcefully to remove it.
Separating the Gas Lift from the Base
- Invert the chair (seat facing down, feet facing up) and use a rubber mallet to strike around the steel ring at the bottom of the feet in a circular motion, attempting to pull out the gas lift.
- If stuck, firmly grasp the gas lift with one hand and use an iron hammer to lightly strike the chassis in a circular motion with the other hand until the gas lift separates from the chassis.
- In extreme cases, apply edible oil to lubricate the gas lift and let it sit for 1-2 hours before attempting again.
Disassembling Other Parts
- Base and Backrest: Loosen screws in the installation order, first separating the backrest. Then, raise the gas lift to its maximum height, grasp the seat cushion with one hand, press the height adjustment lever with the other hand, and shake to remove the base.
- Gas Lift: Invert the chair feet and strike the gas lift with a rubber mallet (use a wooden board as a cushion to protect parts if a rubber mallet is unavailable).
III. Handling Special Situations
- Gas Lift and Chair Feet Stuck Together: Prolonged use may cause them to bond tightly. Exercise patience during disassembly. Avoid violent strikes; try multiple lubrications or use professional tools for assistance. If still unable to separate, contact IKEA after-sales service or a professional repair person to prevent part damage or personal accidents.
Tip: After disassembly, store small parts such as screws and nuts properly to avoid loss. After cleaning or repair, reassemble in the reverse order.
