IKEA Office Chair Disassembly

Admin October 13, 2026

The disassembly of an IKEA office chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the model and design differences. Generally, it can be carried out according to the following steps:

I. Tool Preparation

Prepare rubber hammers, screwdrivers (or awls), wrenches, and hex wrenches in advance. Some models with electric lifting functions may require electric screwdrivers. The rubber hammer is a key tool used to separate the gas rod from the base to avoid damage caused by metal hammers.

II. Disassembly Steps

  1. Caster Disassembly
Place the chair upright and directly grasp the wheels with your hands and pull them outward. If the wheels are stuck, use a screwdriver or hex wrench to hold the edge of the wheels, place the chair horizontally, and then hold the wheels with both hands, with the lower hand applying force to pull them down. Be careful not to use excessive force to avoid breaking the wheel axles.

  2. Separation of the Gas Rod and the Base
Turn the chair upside down (with the seat facing down and the feet facing up), and use a rubber hammer to evenly tap around the steel ring at the bottom of the feet to try to pull out the gas rod. If it is stuck, hold the gas rod tightly with one hand and use an iron hammer to lightly tap the edge of the base in a circular motion with the other hand, or apply a small amount of cooking oil for lubrication and let it sit for 1-2 hours before trying to pull it out again. When tapping, operate in a circular motion to avoid deformation of the base due to single-point force.

  3. Disassembly of Other Components

  • Base Screws: Some models can directly loosen the fixed screws on the base to separate the components.
  • Connection between the Chair Legs and the Frame: Use the corresponding tools (such as hex wrenches) to loosen the screws connecting the chair legs and the seat frame one by one, and be sure to keep the screws to prevent loss.
  • Button/Snap Release: According to the design, press or rotate the buttons, switches, or snaps at the connection of the chair legs to release the locking structure.
  • Lifting Function Components: First, remove the fixed screw in the middle of the lifting cylinder, and then use a long screwdriver to remove the pin screw to separate the lifting rod from the seat. When operating, fix the seat to prevent rotation and injury to your hands.

III. Precautions

  1. Tool Selection: Give priority to using rubber hammers. Metal hammers may damage the base or the gas rod.
  2. Structure Confirmation: If you are not familiar with the structure of the chair, it is recommended to download the installation instructions (in PDF format) for the model from the IKEA official website or contact after-sales service for guidance.
  3. Safe Operation: Avoid using excessive force during disassembly to prevent parts from flying off or injuring yourself. The removed screws and small components should be stored separately for easy subsequent assembly.
  4. Special Models: Some chairs (such as models with armrests or headrests) may require the disassembly of additional components first, and then follow the above steps.
