Hydraulic Office Chair Repair

Admin October 17, 2026

Repairing a hydraulic office chair requires first identifying the fault and then addressing it specifically. Common repair methods include lubrication maintenance, inflation operations, and replacing the hydraulic rod. Details are as follows:

I. Fault Identification

It is necessary to determine the type of fault. Common issues and their causes include:

  • Insufficient air pressure: The chair sinks or fails to support after sitting, possibly due to air leakage or insufficient air pressure.
  • Stuck: There is significant resistance during adjustment, but the chair does not move, often due to debris accumulation or rust at the connection of the lifting rod.
  • Aging of the seal ring: Oil stains on the surface of the hydraulic rod indicate damage to the seal ring, leading to leakage of hydraulic oil.
  • Internal wear or lubrication failure: Stuttering or abnormal noises during lifting indicate the need to check for wear on internal components. Additionally, it is necessary to confirm that the operation method is correct:
  • Pneumatic office chair: Pulling up the operating lever while unoccupied raises the seat; pulling up the lever while seated lowers it.
  • Screw-type adjustment: Turning the knob clockwise lowers the height, while turning it counterclockwise raises it. Ensure the direction is correct.

II. Repair Methods

1. Lubrication Maintenance

  • Flip the chair over and use a screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screws connecting the chair legs to the base of the hydraulic rod, separating the components.
  • Hold the middle part of the hydraulic rod with both hands and shake it. If it is too tight, lightly tap the edge of the connection with a rubber mallet to assist in loosening.
  • Spray lubricating oil (such as sewing machine oil or WD-40) on the surface of the lifting rod and the connection gaps. Move it back and forth several times to allow the oil to penetrate inside. After reassembling, test whether the lifting is smooth.

2. Inflation Operation (for pneumatic chairs only)

  • Locate the inflation port with a cap at the bottom of the chair and use a manual or electric inflation pump with a matching interface.
  • Inflate slowly. The recommended pressure range for office chairs is 0.5-1.0 MPa. Observe the changes in the chair while inflating to avoid over-inflation and bursting.

3. Replacing the Hydraulic Rod

  • Safely disassemble the old rod:
    • Prepare tools such as a wrench, screwdriver, rubber mallet, gloves, and goggles.
    • Separate the five-star base: Invert the chair and use a pipe wrench to grip the metal collar connecting the hydraulic rod to the five-star base. Rotate counterclockwise (usually reverse-threaded) to remove it. If necessary, drip lubricating oil to assist.
    • Separate the chair seat: Observe the connection method between the chair surface base and the top of the hydraulic rod (snap-ring type or screw-fixed type). Use a screwdriver to pry open the snap ring or unscrew the fixing screws and then pull out the old rod.
  • Accurately measure and purchase a new rod:
    • Measure the total length of the old rod (the shortest length when fully compressed), the pipe diameter (such as Class 3 or Class 4), and the stroke (the difference between the maximum extension and minimum compression).
    • Bring the old rod or a photo of its dimensions and purchase a new rod of the same specifications with safety certification (such as SGS/BIFMA). The price is approximately 30-100 yuan.
  • Install the new rod:
    • Clean the threads or interfaces of the five-star base and the chair seat base.
    • Connect the five-star base: Align the bottom thread of the new rod with the five-star base and rotate it clockwise to tighten (first tighten by hand and then reinforce with a pipe wrench).
    • Install the chair seat: Insert the top of the rod into the base and install the snap ring or fixing screws.
    • Test: Place the chair upright and lift and lower it several times to confirm that the lifting is smooth and the locking is secure.
