Hunan Noon Break Office Chair
Some schools in Hunan have promoted adjustable noon break chairs, enabling students to 'lie down and sleep', but full-scale adoption still faces funding challenges.

Promotion Background and Functional Features
The promotion of adjustable noon break chairs originated from a proposal made by NPC deputy Liu Feifei during the 2023 Hunan Provincial People's Congress. The aim is to address the cervical and lumbar spine health issues caused by students' traditional practice of 'sleeping on the desk'. These chairs can recline the backrest by adjusting the handle and are equipped with a retractable footrest, creating a flat-lying mode similar to an office recliner, providing students with more comfortable noon break conditions. For example, since September 1, 2024, Yangtianhu Experimental School in Tianxin District, Changsha, has fully adopted new-style nap chairs. Students report that they feel more energetic in the afternoon after lying down to sleep, and the chair design also takes safety into account. When the backrest is reclined, it forms a stable supporting structure with the desktop, preventing the risk of tipping over.
Pilot Scope and Results
Currently, these types of desks and chairs have been piloted and promoted in multiple places such as Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Chenzhou. Taking Changsha as an example, in addition to Yangtianhu Experimental School, some primary and secondary schools in districts and counties have also gradually replaced traditional desks and chairs. Data from pilot schools show that students' noon break quality has significantly improved, and cases of physical discomfort caused by improper sleeping postures have decreased by about 40%. The principal of a pilot school in Zhuzhou stated that the new chairs are made of environmentally friendly materials, comply with national desk and chair standards, and are easy to operate, allowing even lower-grade students to adjust them independently.
Obstacles to Full-scale Adoption
Despite the positive pilot results, full-scale promotion still faces funding pressures. The procurement cost of each set of adjustable noon break chairs is 100 to 200 yuan higher than that of traditional desks and chairs. For a school with a thousand students, replacing all desks and chairs would require an additional expenditure of 100,000 to 200,000 yuan. Some economically underdeveloped areas have limited financial budgets and find it difficult to bear the cost of large-scale replacements. In addition, some parents have concerns about the durability of the chairs, worrying that frequent adjustments may lead to structural looseness. However, feedback from pilot schools indicates that chairs that have passed professional testing can have a service life of more than 8 years, and the maintenance costs are similar to those of traditional desks and chairs.
Future Prospects
A relevant person in charge from the Hunan Provincial Department of Education stated that they will alleviate funding issues through a 'financial subsidy + social donation' model and give priority to promoting them in rural areas and schools with a large number of left-behind children. At the same time, some enterprises have started to develop more economical models of noon break chairs, reducing costs by optimizing materials and structural designs to create conditions for full-scale adoption.
