How to Sew Office Chairs
Admin October 09, 2026
Sewing office chairs requires selecting methods based on the material and requirements. Common methods include fully-enclosed chair covers, custom-fitted methods, and leather seat cover sewing. The specific operations are as follows:

I. Sewing Method for Fully-Enclosed Chair Covers
- Measurement and Cutting
Use a flexible tape measure to measure the dimensions (length, width, and thickness) of the seat, backrest, and armrests, leaving a 5-centimeter seam allowance on each side. For the top fabric, it is recommended to choose durable materials such as cotton and linen or canvas, and pair the bottom with thin cotton or interlining to enhance support. If disassembly and washing are required, the backrest, seat, and other components can be cut separately for easy subsequent assembly. - Sewing and Turning
Place the fabric pieces right sides together and sew along the edges, leaving a 5-centimeter opening for turning. Cut notches (triangular cuts) at the corners to prevent fabric bunching. Turn the chair cover right side out through the opening and close the opening with a blind stitch to ensure a neat appearance. - Securing and Decorating
If disassembly and washing are required, Velcro or buttons can be installed at the edges of the chair cover. Decorative elements (such as embroidery or appliquรฉs) are recommended to be concentrated at the top or edges of the backrest to avoid blocking the adjustment buttons or affecting sitting stability.
II. Custom-Fitted Method (Suitable for Quick Production)
- Patternless Cutting
Lay the fabric directly on the chair and draw the outline with chalk before cutting, leaving a 1-2 centimeter seam allowance at the edges. This method is suitable for stretchy fabrics (such as knit fabric) and can utilize the elasticity to naturally fit the chair shape. - Adapting to Stretchy Fabrics
If using thick stretchy fabric, measure the width and height of the backrest and leave an additional 3-centimeter seam allowance. After sewing, stretch the fabric to fit the curve of the backrest. This method does not require complex pattern making and is suitable for temporary use or non-standard chair shapes.
III. Sewing Process for Leather Seat Covers (Suitable for Leather Office Chairs)
- Pattern Making and Cutting
Use foam as the base to make a non-woven fabric pattern, mark the points, and then create a paper pattern. Leave about a 1-centimeter width for the seams. Use the paper pattern to cut the leather, ensuring accurate dimensions. - Padding and Sewing
Add different thicknesses of cotton layers under the leather surface to enhance comfort. The standard seam width is 1 centimeter, and after sewing, press decorative lines (single, double, or piping) to enhance aesthetics. - Installing Fixing Accessories
Install clips and zippers at the edges of the leather cover for easy subsequent covering and removal. The clips must match the structure of the backrest to ensure a secure fit.
General Recommendations
- Material Selection: Prioritize the use of durable fabrics such as elastic fabric or denim to extend the service life. For leather office chairs, choose soft and tear-resistant leather.
- Sewing Techniques: Use pins to fix the fabric before sewing to prevent misalignment. Cut notches at the corners to make turning easier. For stretchy fabrics, use elastic thread for sewing to prevent breakage.
- Safety and Practicality: Decorative elements should avoid blocking the adjustment buttons on the backrest or affecting sitting stability. The chair cover should leave enough room for movement to avoid restricting the user's actions.
