How to Separate Office Chairs
Admin October 14, 2026
The method for separating office chairs depends on the type; the separation steps for common types are as follows:

I. Separation Steps for Common Office Chairs
- Flip the Chair: Place the chair upside down on a soft surface (such as a carpet) to avoid damage to components from hard impacts.
- Remove the Seat Cushion and Backrest: Use the appropriate screwdriver (e.g., Phillips or flat-head) to unscrew the fixed screws connecting the seat cushion and backrest. Some designs may require removing the decorative cover below the backrest first.
- Detach the Armrests: Most armrests are fixed with hex socket screws and need to be removed by rotating counterclockwise with a hex key. If the screws are rusted, add a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) and let it sit for 5 minutes before operating.
- Separate the Gas Cylinder from the Base:
- The base and gas cylinder of an office chair are usually an interference fit. Pulling directly may cause the gas cylinder to pop out or be damaged.
- The correct method: Gently tap the side of the joint between the base and seat cushion with a rubber mallet to loosen the mating surface through vibration and gradually separate them. If the gas cylinder and base are stuck, after inverting the chair, use a hairdryer to heat the root of the gas cylinder (keep the temperature below 60โ to avoid damaging plastic components with high heat), soften the epoxy adhesive or lubricate the snap-fit structure, and then try to separate them.
II. Separation Steps for Pneumatic Office Chairs
- Remove the Casters: Place the chair base upside down on a flat surface and use an adjustable wrench to rotate the fixed screw in the center of the caster counterclockwise to remove the caster assembly.
- Separate the Pneumatic Cylinder from the Chassis:
- Gently tap the metal ring at the root of the pneumatic cylinder with a rubber mallet while rotating the plastic cover of the chassis counterclockwise by hand to break the interference fit or snap-fit structure.
- If resistance is encountered, inject a small amount of WD-40 rust inhibitor into the joint and let it sit for 30 minutes before repeating the operation. Avoid violent tapping to prevent damage to the outer steel tube of the pneumatic cylinder (which may cause oil seal failure or hydraulic oil leakage).
- Release the Seat Cushion Connection: Remove the four cross-head screws at the bottom of the seat cushion. If the screws are severely rusted, add lubricant and let it sit for 10 minutes before removing them with a screwdriver.
- Pull Out the Pneumatic Cylinder Core: After the pneumatic cylinder is separated from the chassis, grasp the cylinder body and lift it vertically while gently shaking it left and right to use inertia to disengage it from the seat cushion hole.
- Handle Residual Snap-fits: Use needle-nose pliers to clamp out the plastic washers or metal snap rings stuck in the chassis holes to ensure no residual components affect subsequent assembly.
Precautions:
- Wear protective gloves during the separation process to avoid scratches from screws or accidental ejection of the pneumatic cylinder.
- If the chair uses epoxy adhesive for interface fixation, control the temperature during heating and softening to prevent deformation of plastic components.
- After separation, keep small components such as screws and snap fits properly to avoid loss and prevent inability to restore them.
