How to Separate Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

The disassembly of office chairs can be carried out according to the following steps, and adjustments should be made flexibly according to the specific model:

1. Separate the seat and the backrest First, check how the backrest is connected to the seat. If it is a split-type design, fixed screws are usually visible at the joint where the backrest meets the seat at the bottom. Use a screwdriver of the corresponding size to turn the screws counterclockwise and remove them, thus separating the backrest from the seat. Some chairs with an integrated backrest may skip this step and proceed directly to the next operation.

2. Remove the armrests The armrests are mostly fixed to both sides of the seat with screws. Observe whether there are plastic covers at the connection points between the armrests and the seat. If so, use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully pry open the covers, expose the internal screws, and then unscrew them. If there are no covers, simply unscrew the visible screws to remove the armrests. Be careful to keep the screws and small parts to avoid losing them during the operation.

3. Separate the gas lift and the base Turn the chair completely upside down so that the five-star base faces upwards. There are two ways to connect the gas lift and the base:

  • Spring clip fixation: Use needle-nose pliers or a special tool to loosen the spring clip at the bottom of the gas lift and pull the gas lift straight upwards.
  • Screw fixation: Unscrew the fixed screws at the connection point between the gas lift and the base to separate the gas lift. For swivel office chairs, use a hammer to lightly tap the central connecting sleeve (metal ring) of the five-star base to loosen it. If it is stuck, drip some lubricating oil and let it sit for 10 minutes before trying again. After the sleeve is loosened, hold both sides of the five-star base firmly and pull it outwards to separate the base from the gas lift.

4. Remove the casters The casters are usually directly snapped into the caster sockets on the base. You can hold the casters with both hands and pull them outwards with force, or use a screwdriver to lightly pry the edges of the casters to assist in the removal. If the screws are rusted, spray some rust remover to soften the rust before operating to avoid damaging the parts by forcing the prying.

5. Deal with the seat and the base The base (the metal plate that connects the seat to the gas lift) is mostly fixed to the bottom of the seat with screws. After unscrewing all the visible screws, if the base is still tightly attached to the seat, check for hidden snap fasteners. Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry along the gap at the edge of the base to separate the seat from the base.

Precautions:

  • It is recommended to take photos to record the connection methods of each part before disassembly for reference during reassembly.
  • If you encounter snap fasteners or special screws (such as hexagon socket screws or triangular screws) that you cannot solve, it is advisable to contact the manufacturer for disassembly instructions or seek help from professional maintenance personnel.
  • Wear gloves during the operation to avoid scratches or pinches.
