How to Return Office Chair to Position

Admin October 12, 2026

The method for returning an office chair to its proper position depends on the type of adjustment mechanism. Here are the common types and steps:

I. Lever-Type Adjustment Mechanism

  1. Regular Office Chair: If the backrest cannot rebound after being fully reclined, locate the metal adjustment lever beneath the seat (usually at the connection between the seat and the backrest). First, straighten the backrest, then continuously press the lever 5-6 times to release the air pressure and achieve reset. If there is still no response after pressing, check if the lever is stuck by foreign objects or try gently shaking the backrest to assist in resetting.
  2. Reclining Office Chair: Resetting requires two steps:
    • Unlock: Pull the metal lever beneath the seat (some models may require simultaneous pressing) to put the backrest into an adjustable state;
    • Reset: Lean forward with your back or push the backrest to an upright position of about 90ยฐ, then release the unlocking device to complete the locking. If the backrest is still loose after resetting, repeat the operation or check if the lever is fully returned.

II. Knob-Type Adjustment Mechanism

  1. Regular Office Chair: Find the circular rotary knob at the bottom right of the chair. Turn it clockwise all the way and then reverse it by about 45 degrees to test the force. If there is resistance or jamming, fully unscrew the knob, apply a small amount of lubricating oil (such as WD-40) to the threads, then reinstall and readjust.
  2. Reclining Office Chair: Rotate the side knob to the "unlock" position. For resetting, first unlock it, then adjust it to the upright position and lock it. If the knob cannot be turned, it may be due to worn internal gears, and you need to contact after-sales service for repair.

III. Button-Type Adjustment Mechanism

Only found on reclining office chairs. To reset, press the circular or square button on the side of the chair body to unlock the backrest, adjust it to the upright position, and then release the button to complete the locking. If the button does not respond, it may be due to a failed spring or an internal circuit fault, and you need to disassemble and check or replace the components.

IV. Wire-Controlled Lever-Type Adjustment Mechanism

Some high-end models are equipped with this function. You need to simultaneously pull up the devices on both sides of the seat to activate the automatic return function. Keep both hands synchronized during operation to avoid structural misalignment caused by unilateral force. If the automatic return fails, it may be due to a broken wire-controlled device, and you need to replace the parts.

Precautions:

  • Before resetting, confirm the chair's load-bearing parameters (usually marked on the backrest or base). Overloading may cause damage to the air pressure rod or mechanical structure;
  • When adjustment is difficult, prioritize using lubricating oil for assistance and avoid forced operation that may cause component breakage;
  • Regularly clean the dust inside the adjustment devices (such as knob gaps and lever tracks) to reduce the risk of mechanical failures;
  • If multiple attempts still fail to reset the chair, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer's after-sales service to avoid voiding the warranty due to self-disassembly.
