How to Retract the Footrest of an Office Chair with a Footrest
Admin October 08, 2026
To retract the footrest of an office chair with a footrest, follow these steps based on the type and design of the footrest:

1. Regular Footrest (with Button/Pull Ring)
- Locate the Device: First, observe the bottom of the chair or the connection point of the footrest to find a visible button, pull ring, or snap-fit device. These designs are typically used to simplify operation and are common in mid-to-low-end office chairs.
- Trigger Operation: If there is a button, press it with your finger; if it is a pull ring, pull it upward with your hand. After triggering the device, apply an upward thrust simultaneously to slowly retract the footrest until it is flush with the bottom of the chair. Be sure to move steadily and avoid applying excessive force that could damage the parts.
- Check for Fixation: After retracting, gently shake the footrest to confirm that it is fully locked to the bottom of the chair, preventing accidental popping out during use and posing a safety hazard.
2. Footrest without Button/Pull Ring
- Direct Force Application: Some basic footrests do not have an independent switch and need to be retracted by physical force. In this case, hold both sides of the footrest with both hands and apply even upward pressure until the footrest fits against the bottom of the chair.
- Use of Auxiliary Tools: If the footrest becomes stuck due to long-term use, try spraying a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) at the connection point to reduce friction before operating. Before operating, ensure that the chair is in a stable position to avoid tipping over.
3. Retractable Footrest (High-End Models)
- Locate the Switch: The position of the switch for a retractable footrest varies by brand and is commonly found on the side of the seat, the center of the bottom, the connection point of the footrest, or the inside of the armrest. Carefully observe or consult the product manual to confirm the position.
- Type Differentiation:
- Upward Pull Type: Hold the front end of the footrest and pull it upward to the locked position.
- Inward Push Type: Push the footrest toward the chair until it is fully retracted.
- Step-on Unlock Type: Gently step on the unlock pedal below the footrest with your foot while manually retracting the footrest.
- Multi-stage Adjustment: Some footrests support multi-position adjustment. When retracting, operate step by step in order to avoid forced folding that could deform the structure.
4. General Safety Tips
- Pre-operation Check: Ensure that the chair is placed on a flat surface to avoid imbalance during the retraction process due to tilting.
- Force Control: Avoid using excessive force when retracting the footrest, especially for footrests made of plastic or lightweight metal materials, as excessive force could cause breakage.
- Regular Maintenance: Check the screws or snaps at the connection point of the footrest every 3-6 months for looseness and tighten them promptly to extend the service life.
If the footrest still cannot be fixed after operation, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer's after-sales service or a professional repair technician to avoid voiding the warranty or posing a safety risk due to self-disassembly.
