How to Reset an Office Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
Resetting an office chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on its adjustment mechanism. Here are the common types and their operating steps:

I. Lever-Adjusted System Chairs
- Unlock the Control Lever: Locate the adjustment lever beneath the seat (usually on the right side). If the lever was accidentally pushed in and got stuck while the backrest was reclining, pull it out completely.
- Assist in Resetting: The backrest will usually automatically return to its upright position due to the built-in spring. If it doesn't reset automatically, gently push the backrest forward manually to the upright position.
- Lock the Angle: Once the backrest is fully upright, push the control lever into the correct locking pin hole to ensure the angle is locked.
II. Gas-Lift Adjusted Chairs
- Initiate Adjustment: Locate the adjustment handle beneath the chair and pull it upward (some models may require pressing a side button).
- Reset Operation: Lean forward with your body, and the backrest will return to the upright position following the force of your body. Release the handle to re-fix the angle.
III. Knob-Adjusted Chairs
- Unlock or Adjust Resistance: Locate the knob on the side or back of the seat. Turning it counterclockwise usually unlocks it or reduces the reclining resistance.
- Reset and Set: Lean forward to reset the backrest. Some high-end models require setting the maximum recline angle via the knob to prevent excessive reclining.
IV. General Troubleshooting and Maintenance
- Clear Obstructions: Check the pivot at the bottom of the backrest and the gaps in the base for any obstructions such as cables or fabric fibers. Clear them and attempt to reset.
- Lubricate Mechanisms: If the operation feels stiff, apply lubricating oil (such as WD-40) to the control lever's connecting shaft and the base to reduce friction.
- Disable the Rocking Function: If the chair is in a rocking state, locate the adjustment lever or lock beneath it and push it back to the locked position.
- Check for Mechanical Failures: If the spring fails, the locking block breaks, or the hydraulic rod leaks oil, contact after-sales service for repair or replacement of parts.
Safety Tips: Avoid forceful operations when resetting. Before getting up, support yourself with your arms on the armrests, slowly lift your upper body to a standard sitting position, and then stand up using the strength of your legs. If the problem persists, it is recommended to first check for mechanical failures or contact a professional for assistance.
