How to Replace Office Chair Casters

Admin October 08, 2026

The steps for replacing office chair casters are as follows:

  1. Prepare Tools
    Before replacing the casters, prepare basic tools: a wrench or socket wrench (for turning threaded components) and pliers (to assist in removing stubborn wheels). If the wheels have become rusted or stuck due to long-term use, you can also prepare lubricating oil or a mild degreaser to apply to the threads and reduce friction.

  2. Expose the Wheels and Base
    Lay the office chair down or flip it completely so that the bottom faces up, ensuring that the connection between the base and the wheels is fully exposed. Be mindful of the chair's weight distribution during this step to avoid tipping due to an unstable center of gravity. If the chair has a pneumatic lift, lock the height adjustment mechanism in advance to prevent accidental movement during operation.

  3. Remove the Old Wheels
    Use a wrench or socket wrench to turn the threaded shaft of the wheel counterclockwise. If the wheel is tightly connected to the base, first use pliers to grip the base of the threaded shaft and assist in rotation. If it still cannot be removed, spray a small amount of lubricating oil onto the threads and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before trying again. Do not use brute force to strike the wheel, as this may damage the plastic structure of the base or the threads.

  4. Clean the Connection Area
    After removing the old wheels, use a dry cloth or soft brush to clean dust, hair, and other debris from the connection holes in the base. If there is rust or dirt in the threaded holes, use a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of alcohol to wipe them clean, ensuring that the threads of the new wheels can engage smoothly during installation.

  5. Install the New Wheels
    Align the threaded shaft of the new wheel with the connection hole in the base and turn it counterclockwise by hand to tighten it initially, avoiding direct use of tools that may cause over-tightening. After installation, perform two key checks:

  • Rotation Test: Gently push the wheel to confirm that it can rotate 360 degrees freely without jamming;
  • Insertion Test: While pressing down on the wheel, rock it back and forth along the direction of the chair legs. If it cannot be pressed in smoothly, rotate the wheel shaft so that the small metal ring on the shaft fits into the notch of the plastic opening. This step ensures that the wheel is fully secured to the base and will not come loose during use.

Precautions:

  • It is recommended to replace the wheels as a set to avoid chair wobbling caused by different degrees of wear between new and old wheels;
  • If the base is made of plastic, apply moderate force when tightening the wheels, as excessive force may cause the threads to strip;
  • After installation, place the chair back on the ground and test its stability with short-distance movement to confirm that there are no abnormalities before regular use.
