How to Remove the Footrest of an Office Chair
Admin October 08, 2026
The method for removing the footrest of an office chair depends on its specific design type. Here are some common removal methods:

I. Retractable Footrest (Hidden Inside the Chair Body)
This type of footrest is usually fixed to both sides of the chair body with snaps. The removal steps are as follows:
- Locate the Snaps: Observe the positions near the footrest on both sides of the chair body and look for pressable plastic or metal snaps (some designs are hidden and need to be felt by hand).
- Operate Simultaneously: Use both hands to pinch the snaps on both sides simultaneously, maintaining even pressure to avoid damaging the snaps by applying force on one side only.
- Release the Footrest: After pinching the snaps, the footrest will slowly pop up due to the action of the spring. At this point, gently pull it outward to completely remove it.
Note: If the snaps are too tight, you can try using a flat tool (such as a plastic prying piece) to assist in pressing, but avoid using metal tools to scratch the surface of the chair body.
II. Five-Star Base Structure Footrest (External Design)
This type of footrest is connected to the chair through a five-star base or a central column, and the removal needs to be handled according to different situations:
Method 1: Shaking and Lifting Method (Suitable for Snap Fixing)
- Fix the Five-Star Base: Place the chair flat on the ground and step on the center of the five-star base with your foot to prevent the chair from sliding during removal.
- Shake to Separate: Hold both sides of the seat cushion with both hands, shake it slightly from side to side, and lift it upward simultaneously, using inertia to loosen the footrest from the connecting parts.
- Repeat the Operation: If it is not successful at the first attempt, continue to repeat the shaking-lifting action until the footrest is completely detached from the five-star base.
Principle: This type of design relies on snaps or friction for fixing. Shaking can break the initial static friction, and lifting uses gravity to assist in separation.
Method 2: Inverted Removal Method (Suitable for Tapered Connections or Snap Springs)
- Invert the Chair: Invert the chair onto a soft surface (such as a carpet) to avoid scratching the seat surface or the ground.
- Check the Central Column: Observe the structure at the bottom of the central column of the five-star base:
- If there are flat washer snap springs: Use needle-nose pliers to clamp the edge of the snap spring and slowly pull it outward, then remove the old footrest.
- If there are no snap springs: Wrap a soft cloth around a hammer (to prevent damage to the metal) and gently tap the tapered connection between the central column and the footrest until the connection loosens and detaches.
Warning: Control the force when tapping to avoid excessive force causing deformation of the central column or detachment of the seat surface.
Operation Suggestion: Take a photo of the connection part of the footrest before removal for reference during reassembly. If the footrest is integrated with the chair (such as welded and fixed), contact a professional maintenance technician to avoid damaging the structure by yourself.
