How to Remove an Office Chair

Admin October 10, 2026

The disassembly of an office chair requires step-by-step operations, with the core being the gradual separation of components such as the base, gas lift, chassis, and seat cushion. The specific methods are as follows:

1. Flip the Chair to Remove the Base

Choose the operation method according to the type of base:

  • Base with wheel-foot screws: Place the five-claw base upside down on a flat surface. Use a wrench to rotate the wheel-foot screws counterclockwise until they are completely detached from the base.
  • Integrated base: Place the computer lift chair upside down. Use a rubber mallet to evenly tap around the bottom steel ring to loosen the connection between the base and the gas lift. Then, step on the chair feet with your feet to fix them, hold the base with both hands, sway it left and right, and pull it upward with force. If the first attempt is unsuccessful, repeat the swaying motion and use inertia to gradually separate them.

2. Separate the Gas Lift from the Chassis

The connection between the gas lift and the chassis is usually fixed by a metal ring or a plastic cover:

  • Use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the metal ring at the root of the gas lift while rotating the plastic cover of the chassis counterclockwise with your hand to break its thread engagement. If the plastic cover is aged or stuck, a small amount of lubricating oil can be dripped in to assist in loosening.
  • If the connection is severely rusted, invert the chair and inject WD-40 rust inhibitor into the joint. Let it sit for half an hour and then try to rotate and separate it. Do not use hard objects to strike violently to avoid damaging the internal structure of the gas lift.

3. Release the Seat Cushion Connection

The seat cushion is usually fixed to the chassis with four cross-head screws:

  • Use a cross-head screwdriver to remove the four screws at the bottom of the seat cushion. If the screws are difficult to turn due to rust, drip lubricating oil and let it sit for 10 minutes until the rust softens before operating.
  • After separating the seat cushion, check whether the connection between the chassis and the gas lift is fully exposed.

4. Pull Out the Core of the Gas Lift

After the gas lift is separated from the chassis, the rod body needs to be pulled out vertically:

  • Grasp the rod body of the gas lift, pull it upward vertically, and sway it slightly left and right. Use the lever principle to gradually detach it from the chassis hole.
  • If the connection is tight, invert the seat cushion, step on the bottom of the gas lift with your feet to fix it, hold the chassis with both hands, sway it left and right, and pull it upward. Keep the rod body vertical during operation to avoid tilting and causing the internal gas pressure to be released and injuring people.

5. Handle Residual Clips

Some chassis holes may have residual plastic washers or clips:

  • Use needle-nose pliers to clamp out the plastic washers stuck in the chassis holes to ensure that no residual parts affect subsequent assembly. If the clip is broken, use a small knife to clean the debris on the edge of the hole.
  • Special case handling: If the joint is fixed with epoxy resin adhesive (such as some high-end brands), use a hair dryer to heat it to 60ยฐC to soften the adhesive, and then use tools to assist in separation. Keep a safe distance during heating to avoid burns.

Precautions:

  • Wear protective gloves before operation to avoid scratches or burns.
  • Keep screws, washers, and other small parts properly after disassembly to prevent loss.
  • If there is high-pressure gas inside the gas lift, do not disassemble or puncture the rod body randomly.
