How to Refurbish Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

There are various methods to refurbish office chairs, and you can choose from options such as upgrading a front passenger seat, extending and lengthening the backrest, or renovating an old chair based on your needs. Here are the specific refurbishment methods:

I. Upgrading a Front Passenger Seat to an Office Chair If you need to transform a car's front passenger seat into an office chair, you will need to customize a steel plate with 16 pre-drilled holes (which can be reduced to 10 if no armrests are required). Ten of these holes are used to secure the seat itself, while the remaining six are for installing detachable armrests. After connecting the steel plate to the bottom of the seat with screws, install casters with brakes to enable mobility. If the seat comes with electric adjustment features, prepare compatible batteries and adapters to ensure stable electrical connections. After the modification, test the seat's load-bearing capacity and the flexibility of the casters to avoid the risk of tipping due to an off-center weight distribution.

II. Extending and Lengthening the Backrest

  1. Adding Lumbar Support and a Headrest: Measure the width of the chair back and select a separate lumbar support (which can be independently adjusted for support intensity) and a rotatable headrest (to accommodate different sitting postures). Secure them using no-drill clips or elastic straps to avoid damaging the chair's surface structure.
  2. Adjusting Sitting Posture Height: Place a 3-5 cm thick memory foam cushion on the seat or use a foldable footrest to support your legs, alleviating lower back pressure during prolonged sitting.
  3. Replacing Components: If the original chair legs are not tall enough, measure the interface size and replace them with taller chair legs (it is recommended to choose metal materials for enhanced stability); if you need to increase the backrest support area, retain the original chair frame and only replace the backrest components with taller ones, ensuring they fit the curvature of the chair back.

III. Renovating an Old Office Chair For old chairs with aged leather or worn-out appearances, you can strip off the original leather covering and re-cover them with diamond-patterned PU leather or genuine leather. During renovation, note the following:

  • Use professional tools to strip off the old leather, avoiding damage to the sponge filling layer;
  • When cutting the new leather, leave a 2-3 cm margin for stitching to ensure a tight fit;
  • Prioritize materials with good breathability to enhance comfort during prolonged use.

Before refurbishment, assess the structural safety of the chair to avoid load-bearing failure due to unauthorized modifications. If electrical work or metal processing is involved, it is recommended to wear safety goggles and gloves and use professional tools for operation.
