How to Recline an Office Chair
Admin October 16, 2026
To adjust an office chair to a reclined position, follow these steps, which may vary depending on the type of chair:

1. Confirm the Chair Type and Function First, ensure that your office chair has a reclining function, which is typically supported by mid-to-high-end ergonomic chairs or gaming chairs. You can check by observing whether there are adjustment levers, knobs, or buttons at the bottom of the seat or by consulting the product manual. If the chair does not have a reclining design (such as a basic fixed chair), it cannot be reclined.
2. Unlock the Reclining Mechanism Choose the corresponding operation based on the chair's adjustment method:
- Lever Type: Locate the independent adjustment lever on the right (or left) side beneath the seat. Pull it out horizontally until you hear an unlocking sound, then slowly lean back, allowing the backrest to adjust its angle with the pressure.
- Toggle/Push-Down Type: Try pushing down or pulling back the adjustment lever while leaning back. After releasing, the backrest may automatically lock in the current position; some models may require continuous pressure on the toggle to maintain the reclined position.
- Knob Type: Rotate the knob clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the reclining resistance (loosening the knob makes reclining easier). Unlocking may require pulling a separate toggle or continuing to lean back.
- Electric Adjustment: Use the control panel or buttons on the side of the seat. Press and hold the button marked with a backrest tilt icon, and the backrest will automatically recline to the preset angle.
3. Adjust the Reclining Angle
- For Daily Office Work: It is recommended to set the reclining angle to 110ยฐ, which helps disperse lumbar pressure and facilitates intervertebral disc decompression.
- For Lunch Breaks or Relaxation: Adjust the angle to between 110ยฐ and 130ยฐ. Some high-end chairs can reach 135ยฐ or even 160ยฐ (close to lying flat). For example, models like the Bajiujian C6 can achieve a full 180ยฐ recline.
- Lock the Angle: After adjusting to the desired position, push the adjustment lever back into place or listen for a โclickโ sound, indicating that the angle is locked; for electric chairs, press the button again to fix the position.
4. Additional Adjustments (Optional)
- Headrest: Adjust it to support the cervical spine. For lunch breaks, it is recommended to raise it 1-2 cm above the base height to avoid the neck hanging in the air.
- Lumbar Support: Match the height vertically and adjust the support intensity in the depth direction to ensure the waist fits snugly against the backrest, avoiding suspension or excessive pressure.
- Footrest: Adding a retractable footrest can enhance leg comfort, especially for scenarios with a larger reclining angle.
Precautions
- Before adjusting, confirm the chair's reclining range. Most office chairs have a reclining limit of around 135ยฐ. Forcing it beyond this limit may cause structural damage.
- Maintain body balance during operation to avoid sudden force that may cause the chair to lose control; move slowly while reclining to prevent the risk of tipping over.
