How to Recline an Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

The method for reclining an office chair varies depending on its design type, and the corresponding operation method should be selected according to the specific structure.

I. Mechanical Knob Adjustment

Such chairs are usually equipped with a base knob and a handle, and the adjustment process involves two steps:

  1. Resistance Adjustment: Rotate the base knob (usually marked with an arrow direction). Rotating it clockwise increases the resistance of the chair back when reclining, suitable for heavier individuals; rotating it counterclockwise reduces the resistance, facilitating easy reclining.
  2. Angle Locking: After sitting upright, gently pull the handle on the side of the seat. A clicking sound indicates that the locking state is released. At this point, slowly lean back while continuously pulling the handle, and the chair back will gradually recline with the pressure. After reaching a comfortable angle, release the handle, and the chair back will automatically lock in the current position.

II. Pneumatic Rod Linkage Adjustment

Such chairs rely on pneumatic rods to achieve cushioning and linkage functions, and the operation methods vary by model:

  1. Basic Cushioning Adjustment: When reclining, gently push the seat towards the chair back to activate the cushioning function of the pneumatic rod, allowing the chair back to recline smoothly with the pressure. High-end models (such as the Sihoo M1) support simultaneous adjustment of the armrests, achieving linkage between the chair back and armrest angles with a single button design.
  2. Locking Switch Adjustment: Some chairs require pulling up the locking switch (usually a lever or button) under the seat before adjusting the chair back angle. After adjustment, release the switch, and the chair back will be fixed in the current position.

III. Lever Adjustment

Such chairs control the reclining angle through a physical lever, and attention should be paid to the force and timing during operation:

  1. Lever Activation: Locate the adjuster (which may be a lever, knob, or pull rod) under the chair and pull it up.
  2. Simultaneous Force Application: While pulling up the adjuster, apply force to the back to tilt the chair back. Continuous force application and maintaining the lever state are required until the target angle is reached to avoid angle rebound due to midway release.
  3. Angle Fixation: After reaching a comfortable angle, release the adjuster, and the chair back will maintain the current tilt.

IV. Smart Touch Adjustment

Such chairs integrate electronic control modules and support personalized angle settings:

  1. Button/APP Control: Set the reclining angle through the touch buttons on the chair back or a mobile app. Some models can remember common preferences (such as office mode at 60ยฐ-90ยฐ and rest mode at 90ยฐ-135ยฐ).
  2. Scene Adaptation: In office mode, it is recommended to keep the line of sight level with the top of the screen and the neck naturally drooping; in rest mode, a footrest should be used to distribute leg pressure. For fabric chairs, the reclining angle is recommended to be โ‰ค130ยฐ, and for leather chairs, it can be slightly larger.

Safety Precautions

  1. Avoid Sudden Force Application: Apply force slowly when reclining to prevent the pneumatic rod from losing control due to impact force.
  2. Regularly Check Components: Check the adjustment knobs, levers, or pneumatic rods monthly for looseness to ensure structural stability.
  3. Weight Adaptation: Individuals with lighter weights should choose low-resistance settings to avoid the chair back being unable to lock; individuals with heavier weights need to increase the resistance to prevent rapid reclining.
