How to Recline an Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

Here are the methods for reclining an office chair:

Unlock the Recline Function

The recline function of an office chair usually needs to be activated through a specific unlocking mechanism. There are two common unlocking methods: one is to have a handle on the right side of the chair; a gentle pull unlocks the backrest, allowing it to move freely. The other is controlled by a button; pushing the button inward locks the chair, while pulling it outward unlocks it, enabling you to adjust the seat angle. The positions and operation methods of the unlocking mechanisms may vary slightly among different brands and models of office chairs, but the basic principles are similar. Users should check the instruction manual that comes with the chair before use to understand the specific unlocking position and operation method.

Adjust the Recline Tension

After unlocking the recline function, to make the chair more comfortable when reclining, users can adjust the recline tension according to their needs. Generally, there is a cylindrical knob on the base of the chair. By turning this knob clockwise, you can increase the backrest's resilient support force, making the chair more resistant when reclining. Turning it counterclockwise softens the tension, making it easier for the chair to recline. Adjust it according to your body weight and recline habits to achieve the best user experience.

Lock the Recline Angle

When the chair is reclined to a suitable angle, it needs to be locked to ensure stability during use. Some office chairs have a control lever on the right side of the seat cushion. Users simply need to pull out the lever, freely recline the chair, find the appropriate angle, and then gently push the lever back in to lock the chair at that angle. Some chairs lock the angle using a button; after adjusting the angle, push the button inward to lock it.

Return to the Upright Position

After use, the chair needs to be returned to the upright position. For chairs with a control lever, pull the lever outward while giving your back a push to make the chair upright, and then push the lever back in to lock it. If the chair locks the angle using a button, perform the corresponding operation to unlock the button, return the chair to the upright position, and relock it.
