How to Recline an Office Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
Here are the methods for reclining an office chair:

Unlock the Recline Function
The recline function of an office chair is usually controlled by an unlock button or handle. Common designs include a handle on the right side or a button at the bottom of the seat:- Handle-type: Gently pull the handle with your right hand to unlock the backrest, allowing it to move freely; some chairs require pulling the handle outward to the unlocked position before adjusting the angle.
- Button-type: Press the button at the bottom or side of the seat to enter the unlocked state, after which the backrest can move with your body as you recline.
Note: Maintain a stable sitting posture during operation to avoid sudden force causing imbalance.
Adjust the Recline Tension
The recline tension affects the support feel of the backrest and needs to be adjusted according to your weight and habits:- Locate the cylindrical knob on the seat base (usually on the right side or at the back) and turn it clockwise to increase the rebound force or counterclockwise to decrease it.
- Adjustment Goal: The backrest should provide moderate resistance when reclining, allowing you to get up without excessive force. For example, those with lighter weight can decrease the tension, while those with heavier weight need increased support.
Adjust the Recline Angle and Lock It
Choose an angle and fix it according to the chair's design:- Infinite Adjustment: For chairs that support free adjustment from 95ยฐ to 160ยฐ, you can pull out the footrest (if available) and recline to the 160ยฐ flat mode.
- Locking Method:
- Control lever on the right side of the seat cushion: Pull it out to adjust the angle, then push it back to lock; to return to the upright position, pull out the lever and gently push your back against the backrest, then push the lever back to lock.
- Button locking: Some chairs require pushing the button inward to fix the position after adjusting the angle.
Tip: Confirm the angle is comfortable before locking to avoid frequent adjustments causing mechanical wear.
Return to the Upright Position
- Unlock the locking device (such as pulling out the control lever or pressing the button), and at the same time, gently push the backrest with your back to allow the chair to slowly rebound to the upright position.
- Re-lock the control lever or button to ensure a stable sitting posture.
Note: Avoid leaning forward suddenly when getting up to prevent the chair from suddenly rebounding and causing a collision.
Safety Tips:
- Before reclining, confirm the chair's weight capacity to avoid structural damage from overloading.
- Regularly check the tightness of screws and gas lifts (if any) to prevent looseness and potential safety hazards.
- Avoid getting up quickly or shaking vigorously in the reclined position to extend the chair's service life.
