How to Recline an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

The core operation for reclining an office chair is to correctly unlock and adjust the control device beneath the seat, with specific methods varying depending on the adjustment mechanism.

Manual Adjustment Office Chairs:

  1. Lever-Type: An independent adjustment lever is typically located on the right (or left) side of the seat base. Pull it horizontally outward until a clicking sound indicates unlocking, then slowly lean back, allowing the chair back to recline. Once at the desired angle, push the lever back inward to lock it in place. This method is common in basic office chairs, offering simple operation but requiring attention to lever direction and locking logic.
  2. Toggle/Push-Down Type: The adjustment lever may be integrated with or adjacent to the seat height adjustment lever. It is triggered by pushing down or pulling back. Some models require releasing the lever after leaning back to lock the angle, while others require resetting the lever to complete locking. Operation requires coordination between body movements and lever status.
  3. Knob-Type: A circular knob on the right (or left) side of the seat is used to adjust recline resistance. Turning it clockwise increases resistance (providing stronger support), while turning it counterclockwise decreases resistance (making reclining easier). Unlocking the recline function may require pulling a separate lever, with high-end models integrating resistance adjustment and angle locking functions.

Electric Adjustment Office Chairs:
Control panels or buttons are integrated on the side of the seat. Locate the button marked with a backrest tilt icon, press or toggle it, and the chair back will automatically recline slowly, stopping when released. Some high-end models support memory preset angles, allowing common postures (such as 110ยฐ for office mode and 130ยฐ for lunch break mode) to be set via programs for one-touch switching. Electric adjustment requires ensuring a stable power connection and avoiding rapid operation to prevent mechanical jamming.

Adjustment Angles and Health Recommendations:

  • For daily office work, a 110ยฐ slight recline angle can disperse spinal pressure and reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting.
  • For lunch break relaxation, 110ยฐ to 130ยฐ is more ergonomic, with some high-end chairs offering recline angles up to 135ยฐ to 160ยฐ, approaching a lying-down position.
  • When adjusting, maintain body balance to avoid tipping over due to excessive recline, and pay attention to neck support (which can be enhanced with a headrest).

Precautions:
Adjustment mechanisms vary among different brands of office chairs. It is recommended to read the instruction manual or observe lever markings before use. Basic models have limited recline functions, mid-range models are controlled by knobs/levers, and high-end models offer multi-dimensional adjustments (such as synchronous lumbar support adjustment). If jamming or abnormal noises occur during adjustment, immediately stop operation and inspect the mechanical structure.
