How to Recline an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

Reclining an office chair can be achieved by adjusting the backrest, purchasing a professional convertible chair, adding accessories for assistance, or using a separate folding bed. Here are the specific methods:

1. Adjust the Backrest Angle
Most office chairs with a recline function can adjust the angle through mechanical structures. To operate, first locate the adjustment button beneath the backrest (usually circular or rectangular). Pull the button outward to unlock it, then slowly lean back your body to a comfortable angle, and push the button inward to lock the position. Some high-end models support infinite adjustment from 95ยฐ to 160ยฐ. If you need to lie completely flat, pull out the hidden footrest (usually located beneath the front of the seat), at which point the backrest and footrest form a nearly flat 160ยฐ position. Note that before adjusting, confirm the chair's weight capacity (usually marked on the backrest or instruction manual) to avoid damaging the mechanical structure due to overloading.

2. Purchase a Professional Convertible Office Chair
There are specially designed โ€œsit-and-lie dual-purpose chairsโ€ on the market, with a core structure featuring a linked backrest and footrest. After pulling the lever on the right side of the seat, the backrest will recline simultaneously while the bottom folding footrest automatically pops out, forming a support surface similar to a bed. Some high-end models are equipped with gas springs or electric motors, supporting one-click switching between sitting and lying positions, with independent adjustment of the backrest angle and footrest height. When purchasing, focus on the material (high-density foam cushion + breathable mesh backrest recommended) and stability (a five-claw metal base is better) to ensure long-term safety in use.

3. Add Accessories for Semi-Reclining Assistance
If the chair only supports basic recline functions, you can enhance comfort with accessories: Place a U-shaped memory foam pillow at the top of the backrest to support the neck and head; add an adjustable lumbar support to fill the gap in the lumbar spine. During lunch breaks, adjust the backrest to the maximum angle (usually around 135ยฐ) and cover your legs with a thin blanket to avoid getting cold. Although this method does not allow for complete reclining, it can reduce body pressure through ergonomic design, suitable for short breaks. Regularly clean the accessories (e.g., the memory foam pillowcase can be removed and washed) to prevent bacterial growth.

4. Use a Separate Folding Bed
If there is sufficient space at the workstation (it is recommended to reserve an area of 1.8 meters in length and 0.6 meters in width), a separate folding bed can be placed. When unfolded, the bed surface is parallel to the ground, achieving a complete 180ยฐ flat position, suitable for scenarios with longer lunch breaks or the need for deep sleep. Choose a folding bed with a latch design to prevent accidental folding; the mattress thickness is recommended to be 5-8 centimeters, as too thin will affect support, and too thick will take up space. After use, fold it up promptly to avoid obstructing passage in the office area.
