How to Recline an Office Chair
The core operation for reclining an office chair lies in correctly unlocking and adjusting the control device beneath the seat, with specific methods varying depending on the adjustment mechanism.

Manual Adjustment Office Chairs
- Lever-Type: The lever is typically located on the right or left side at the bottom of the seat. Pulling it horizontally outward produces an unlocking sound, at which point you can lean back, and the chair back will recline. After adjusting to the desired angle, push the lever back inward to lock it in place. This design directly controls the unlocking and locking of the chair back through a mechanical structure, making it simple and intuitive to operate.
- Toggle/Push-Down Type: The adjustment lever may be integrated with or adjacent to the seat height adjustment lever. Unlocking is triggered by pushing down or pulling back on it. While operating, lean back simultaneously. After releasing the adjustment lever, the chair back may lock in the current position; some models require resetting the adjustment lever to complete locking. This design is common in integrated control devices, and it is important to distinguish between height adjustment and recline adjustment functions.
- Knob-Type: A circular knob on the right or left side of the seat is used to adjust the recline resistance. Rotating it clockwise or counterclockwise changes the support strength of the chair back. Turning the knob looser makes reclining easier, while tightening it provides a stronger sense of support. When unlocking the recline function, you may need to pull a separate toggle lever. This design meets the needs of users with different body weights through resistance adjustment.
- Button-Type: Pushing the button inward locks it, supporting only seat height adjustment; pulling it outward unlocks it, allowing you to adjust the recline angle. After adjusting, push the button back inward to lock it. This design achieves function conversion through the mechanical switching of pushing the button inward and outward, and care should be taken regarding the button direction during operation.
Electric Adjustment Office Chairs
Electric chairs usually have an integrated control panel or buttons on the side of the seat. After locating the button marked with a backrest tilt icon, press or toggle it to make the chair back automatically and slowly recline, and it will stop when released. Some high-end models support memory preset angles, allowing one-touch adjustment to frequently used angles through program settings, enhancing convenience of use.
Angle Selection Recommendations
For daily office work, a slight recline angle of about 110ยฐ can effectively disperse spinal pressure and relieve fatigue from prolonged sitting. For lunch breaks and relaxation, a tilt range of 110ยฐ to 130ยฐ provides more comfortable support. Some high-end chairs can recline up to 135ยฐ or even 160ยฐ, approaching a lying-down position, suitable for short rests. When adjusting, choose an appropriate angle according to actual needs to avoid excessive recline that may cause loss of balance.
