How to Recline an Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

The method for reclining an office chair depends on its adjustment design. Here are the common types and steps:

I. Manual Adjustment Office Chairs

  1. Lever-Type

    • Locate the Adjustment Lever: Bend over and look at the right (or left) side of the chair's base to find an independent metal or plastic lever, usually marked with "Recline" or an arrow symbol.
    • Unlock and Adjust: Pull the lever horizontally outward (some may require a slight lift before pulling). The chair back's resistance will disappear, allowing you to lean back slowly to your desired angle (e.g., 130ยฐ).
    • Lock the Position: Push the lever back into place. You should hear a "click" sound indicating it's locked. If not, check if the lever is fully reset or try gently shaking the chair back to assist in securing it.
  2. Toggle/Push-Down Type

    • Integrated Adjustment Lever: Some chairs combine the recline and height adjustment levers. Distinguish their functions:
      • Height Adjustment: Pull the lever upward to adjust the chair's height.
      • Recline Adjustment: Pull the lever backward or press it downward while leaning back. The chair back may automatically lock when released; if not, operate the lever again to reset.
    • Independent Toggle: A few chairs have a small toggle on the side of the chair back. Pull it backward to unlock recline and push it forward to lock.
  3. Knob-Type

    • Adjust Recline Resistance: Rotate the circular knob on the side of the chair. Turning it clockwise increases resistance (suitable for fixed angles), while turning it counterclockwise decreases resistance (for easier reclining).
    • Unlock and Lock: Some models require pulling a separate toggle to unlock. After adjusting the angle, push the toggle back to lock. If only rotating the knob doesn't lock, check if a dual operation is needed.
  4. General Operation Logic

    • Button State Judgment: Pushing the button inward locks it (only height adjustment is possible). Pulling the button outward unlocks it for recline angle adjustment. After adjusting, push the button back in to lock.

II. Electric Adjustment Office Chairs

  • Button Operation: Find the button marked with a backrest tilt icon (usually "โ†‘โ†“" or a wavy line) on the side of the chair or under the armrest.
  • Angle Adjustment: Press or toggle the button, and the chair back will automatically recline to the released position. Some high-end models support memory functions, allowing you to preset 1-2 common angles (e.g., 110ยฐ for office work, 130ยฐ for lunch breaks). Press and hold the button to save the settings.

III. Angle Recommendations and Precautions

  • Daily Office Work: It is recommended to recline to 110ยฐ to distribute lumbar pressure. Using a lumbar support cushion enhances the effect.
  • Lunch Break Relaxation: A comfortable range of 110ยฐ-130ยฐ is ideal. Pair it with a U-shaped pillow to support your neck and avoid hanging.
  • High-End Models: Some models can recline up to 135ยฐ-160ยฐ, close to lying flat. Confirm if the chair legs have casters (it is advisable to fix the chair to prevent sliding when lying flat).
  • Pre-Operation Check: Bend over and inspect the adjustment mechanism at the connection between the chair base and the backrest to avoid misoperation due to design differences (e.g., accidentally touching the height lever and causing the chair to descend).
