How to Raise the Height of an Office Chair
Here's how to raise the height of an office chair:

1. Locate the Hand Control Device First, find the height adjustment control on the chair. If you are seated, you can usually activate the adjustment function by pulling up the control lever (or rod) beneath the seat; some models may use a knob design, which requires turning clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the height. If you cannot identify the specific control lever, refer to the user manual that comes with the chair or try each lever one by one (be careful not to apply excessive force and damage the components). For pneumatic lift chairs, the control lever is typically located on the right side of the seat, and some designs may be integrated beneath the armrests.
2. Perform the Height Adjustment Operation
- Seated Adjustment: After sitting firmly, slowly pull up the control lever and simultaneously use your leg strength to push the seat upward (for pneumatic models, you can repeatedly push the lever up and down to achieve a 'pumping' lift). It is recommended to adjust the height by a few centimeters at a time to avoid imbalance caused by rapid lifting. Once you reach the desired height, release the control lever and confirm that the seat is locked.
- Standing Adjustment: If seated adjustment is restricted (e.g., if your weight prevents the seat from lifting), stand in front of the chair, pull up the control lever and hold it, while directly lifting the seat to the target height with your hands. Then release the control lever to complete the locking. This method is suitable for most pneumatic lift chairs, but note that the control lever must be held up continuously until the adjustment is complete.
3. Verify Comfort and Safety After adjustment, check if the seat height meets ergonomic standards: when your feet are flat on the ground, your knees should be bent at a 90ยฐ angle, and your thighs should be parallel to the ground; if the chair has armrests, your elbows should naturally hang down with the elbows level with the armrest surface. If the height is still not ideal, repeat the above steps for fine-tuning. Additionally, confirm that the seat locking mechanism is engaged (press the seat lightly to ensure there is no sinking feeling) to prevent accidental lifting during use.
Handling Special Cases If the chair cannot be adjusted in height at all, possible reasons include a faulty pneumatic rod, a stuck control lever, or a chair designed for a fixed height. In this case, check if the pneumatic rod is leaking air (press the seat with your hand to see if it slowly rebounds), or contact after-sales service to replace the components. For old-fashioned spiral spring chairs, you need to adjust the height by rotating the threaded rod beneath the seat, but such designs are gradually being replaced by pneumatic structures.
