How to Raise the Height of an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

There are mainly three ways to raise the height of an office chair: pneumatic rod adjustment, screw adjustment, and other handle adjustments.

Pneumatic Rod Adjustment: This is the adjustment method used by most office chairs on the market. Below the office chair, there is a pneumatic rod device, which is the core component for adjusting the chair's height. Generally, there is an adjustment handle below the chair's seat. When you need to raise the chair, simply pull the handle upwards. At this time, the gas pressure inside the pneumatic rod will push the chair upwards. When you need to lower the chair's height, press the handle downwards while slightly lifting your body. By using your body weight and the downward pressure of the handle, the gas inside the pneumatic rod is compressed, and the chair will descend. In addition, some models of pneumatic rods also allow pumping the lever, that is, repeatedly pushing the handle up and down. This method enables more flexible lifting and lowering of the seat to meet the needs of different heights and usage scenarios.

Screw Adjustment: Some office chairs use a screw-type method to adjust the height. At the connection between the chair legs and the seat, there is a threaded device. By rotating the chair's seat or the adjustment component below, you can change the chair's height. Specifically, rotating the adjustment component clockwise will make the threads engage with each other and push the chair upwards. Rotating it counterclockwise will loosen the threads, and the chair will lower. When performing screw adjustment, you need to rotate it with a bit of force because the friction between the threads is relatively large, and only by applying a certain amount of force can you change the height.

Other Handle Adjustments: For some office chairs, when adjusting the height of the backrest, one or two handles are set under the chair seat. When there is a handle below the chair seat, to adjust the height of the armchair, simply lift the handle upwards. At this time, the high-pressure gas inside the air rod will rebound after being compressed. Using the elastic force of the gas, the chair seat will naturally rise. This adjustment method is relatively simple and convenient to operate. However, it should be noted that when lifting the handle, keep it steady to avoid excessive force causing the chair to shake or be damaged.
