How to Raise an Office Chair

Admin October 19, 2026

There are mainly three methods for raising an office chair: pneumatic rod adjustment, screw adjustment, and hydraulic adjustment, with specific operations as follows:

Pneumatic rod adjustment is the most common way to raise an office chair. A pneumatic rod device is installed beneath the office chair, and usually, a regulating handle is set under the chair seat. When you need to raise the chair, simply pull the handle upwards, and the chair will rise accordingly. Its working principle is based on a gas lift cylinder. There is a small push valve at the top of the lift cylinder, which is controlled by a height-adjusting rod. When the adjusting rod is pulled, it changes the state of the valve, creating a pressure difference of compressed nitrogen inside the cylinder. This pressure difference pushes the chair upwards. This adjusting method is simple and convenient and is currently adopted by most office chairs.

Screw adjustment is applicable to some office chairs with a screw-type design. A threaded device is set at the connection part between the chair legs and the seat. By rotating the chair seat or the adjusting component below, you can achieve height adjustment. Specifically, rotating clockwise raises the chair, while rotating counterclockwise lowers it. Due to the tight fit of the threads, this adjusting method is relatively stable. However, when operating, you need to exert a bit of force to rotate and overcome the friction between the threads to change the chair's height.

Hydraulic adjustment is commonly found in some high-end office chairs. It is equipped with a hydraulic adjusting system, and the adjusting method is similar to that of the pneumatic rod. There is also an adjusting rod under the chair seat. Pulling the adjusting rod upwards raises the chair. The hydraulic adjusting system utilizes the incompressibility of liquids to provide a smoother and more precise height-adjusting experience. Compared with pneumatic rod adjustment, hydraulic adjustment is more stable during the raising and lowering processes, without obvious shaking, and is suitable for users with high requirements for the precision of chair height adjustment.

When using an office chair in practice, you can choose the corresponding raising method according to the type and design of the chair.
