How to Raise an Office Chair
Raising an office chair can be achieved through the following steps:

Step 1: Locate the Hand Control Device
The height adjustment of an office chair usually relies on a hand control device, commonly in the form of a lever or knob. If seated, try pulling up the lever beneath the seat (some models may require turning the knob). If unsure about the specific control lever, refer to the user manual that comes with the chair or test the function by pulling up each lever one by oneโthe correct lever will directly change the seat height. For pneumatic lift models, the lever may be located on the right or left side of the seat, and the operation direction should be adjusted according to design differences.
Step 2: Adjust the Height in Stages
After locating the control device, adjust the height in stages to avoid excessive movement. Each operation should only raise or lower the seat by a few centimeters while observing changes in comfort. After adjustment, push the lever back into place to lock the height. Operation logic varies by model:
- Traditional mechanical seats: Pull up the lever to raise the seat and press down to lower it;
- Pneumatic lift seats: Achieve continuous lifting by repeatedly pushing the lever up and down ("pumping"). Some models require holding the lever down until the target height is reached and then releasing it.
If the seat cannot remain stable during adjustment, it may be due to aging of the pneumatic rod or a malfunction in the locking mechanism, and the equipment status should be checked.
Step 3: Use a Standing Posture for Auxiliary Calibration
If adjusting from a seated position is difficult, switch to a standing posture for calibration. When standing, adjust the chair height so that the front edge of the seat is just below the knees. When seated, your feet should naturally rest flat on the ground with your thighs parallel to the ground. This method ensures that the seat height matches ergonomic requirements, reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting. Note: If the chair is equipped with adjustable casters, fix the casters before adjusting the height to prevent the chair from moving unexpectedly.
Handling Special Cases
If the height still cannot be adjusted after following the above steps, it may be due to the following reasons:
- Damaged control device: Check if the lever or knob is loose or broken, and contact after-sales service for repair;
- Failed pneumatic rod: The pneumatic rod in pneumatic lift models may lose elasticity due to air leakage or aging and require replacement parts;
- Design limitations: Some fixed-height office chairs do not have adjustment functions and may require adding a seat cushion or replacing the chair to solve the issue.
Avoid using excessive force during operation to prevent the lever from breaking or the pneumatic rod from bursting. Regularly clean dust around the control device to extend the service life of the adjustment mechanism.
