How to Raise an Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

There are several methods to raise an office chair, and the specific operation depends on the type of adjustment mechanism the chair has:

  1. Pneumatic Rod Adjustment This is the most common adjustment method, suitable for office chairs equipped with pneumatic lifting devices. Usually, there is a long, rectangular handle beneath the seat. When you pull the handle upwards, the chair rises due to the expansion of the high-pressure gas inside; when you press the handle downwards and slightly lift your body, the chair descends as the gas is compressed. Some models may require you to repeatedly push the handle up and down for precise adjustment. When operating, maintain your body balance to avoid losing balance due to sudden lifting or lowering.

  2. Screw Adjustment Some traditional or minimalist office chairs use a threaded structure to adjust the height. You can see a threaded device at the connection between the chair legs and the seat. Turning the seat or the adjustment ring below it clockwise raises the chair, while turning it counterclockwise lowers it. When operating, hold the edge of the seat with both hands and rotate it evenly to avoid adjustment difficulties caused by thread jamming. This method has a slower adjustment speed but offers higher stability.

  3. Hydraulic Adjustment High-end office chairs are often equipped with hydraulic systems, which work similarly to pneumatic rods but use hydraulic oil to transmit pressure for lifting and lowering. The adjustment is also controlled by the handle beneath the seat: pull the handle upwards to raise the chair and press it downwards to lower it. The advantage of hydraulic adjustment is a smoother lifting and lowering process and the ability to precisely position the chair at the desired height, making it suitable for users with high comfort requirements.

  4. Handle Lever Adjustment Some armchairs adopt a lever design with one or two handles beneath the seat. When you lift the handle upwards, the high-pressure gas inside is released, pushing the seat up; when you need to lower the height, first turn the handle upwards, then sit down and keep the handle lifted. At this time, the gas compression is blocked, and the seat naturally descends. When operating, pay attention to the direction of the handle to avoid accidental lifting or lowering due to misoperation.

  5. Fixed Screw Adjustment A few old-fashioned swivel chairs adjust the height through fixed screws at the bottom. You need to first invert the chair, find the screws connecting the seat and the chair legs, loosen them with a tool, adjust to the desired height, and then tighten the screws again to fix them. This method has a low adjustment frequency and requires some manual skills, making it suitable for scenarios where the height requirement is fixed.

Precautions:

  • Before adjustment, check if the handle or screws are loose to prevent them from falling off during operation.
  • Keep your body's center of gravity stable during the lifting and lowering process to prevent the chair from moving suddenly and causing you to fall.
  • If the chair has not been used for a long time or is difficult to adjust, it is advisable to contact after-sales service for inspection and repair to avoid damaging the internal structure by forced operation.
