How to Paint Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

There are mainly two methods for painting office chairs: varnish process and mixed oil process. Here are the specific operations:

Varnish Process

  1. Preliminary Preparation: If the office chair requires a color change, apply color oil or tinting oil first (this step is generally not needed for regular projects). If you insist on applying varnish in the original color, clean the surface after purchasing the materials and immediately apply the first coat of protective primer (usually, the topcoat is used as the primer at this stage). Moreover, the varnish finish must be applied before painting the walls. If the chair originally has old paint that is damaged or aged, the old paint needs to be removed first. The methods include the paint remover method (directly brush the paint remover onto the furniture surface, brush it continuously about three times, then cover it with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. After about 30 minutes (some products take only 15 minutes), the old paint layer will wrinkle. At this time, use a brush dipped in hot water to clean it. The remaining paint flakes can be wiped clean with alcohol), the caustic soda method (soak the caustic soda in boiling water and apply it hot to the painted surface. After about 5 minutes, the old paint will wrinkle, and you can wipe it off with a cloth. You can also use developer solution or ammonium bicarbonate solution instead), and the sandpaper grinding method (first use coarse sandpaper to preliminarily grind and remove the old paint, and then use fine sandpaper for fine grinding and polishing). When operating, pay attention to ventilation, wear gloves and a mask, and ensure that the wood is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.
  2. Specific Steps
    • Surface Treatment: Clean the dust and dirt on the surface of the wooden furniture, and polish the surface of the board or wooden moldings with sandpaper.
    • Painting and Repair: Apply the first coat of paint. After it dries, mix the่ฐƒ้…็š„ (this word seems out of place here, but keeping the original meaning as much as possible, it might mean 'prepared') color powder, cooked glue powder, and double-flying powder to form putty, and use it to fill in the nail holes and tree scars to match the color. After it dries, use fine sandpaper to polish the rough parts of the color powder, and then apply another coat of paint. After it dries, polish it with fine sandpaper.
    • Fine Treatment: Perform a rough spray and then polish and grind it again, followed by a second fine spray. Wet the surface of the board with a damp cloth, and then grind the surface with sandpaper soaked in water, commonly known as wet grinding.
    • Final Painting: Apply the last coat of paint. Generally speaking, applying 4 - 8 coats of topcoat, including the last one, will result in a relatively high-quality finish. More coats of paint on the surface layer are not necessarily better, but generally, it should not exceed 10 coats. When painting in humid weather, the paint film may turn white. Adding 10% - 15% of nitrocellulose magnetized white water to the diluent can eliminate this phenomenon.

Mixed Oil Process

  1. Preliminary Preparation: First, clean the dust and dirt on the surface of the wooden furniture. If the chair has old paint, it also needs to be removed using the above methods.
  2. Specific Steps
    • Putty Application: Mix pig blood putty and double-flying powder well and apply it all over the surface of the wooden furniture.
    • Grinding and Painting: After it dries, polish it with sandpaper and apply the first coat of paint. Touch up the defective areas. After it dries, polish it with sandpaper and apply the second coat of paint. After it dries, polish it with sandpaper and apply the third coat of paint. Generally speaking, 2 - 3 coats of mixed oil are appropriate.
