How to Make Office Chairs with Clay

Admin October 13, 2026

You can make ordinary office chairs or handmade swivel chairs with colored clay. Here are the specific steps:

Making an Ordinary Office Chair

  • Prepare materials: Mainly use orange-colored clay, and you can also prepare some auxiliary tools, such as a small knife (for cutting the clay).
  • Make the chair seat: Take an appropriate amount of orange-colored clay and shape it into a parallelogram by kneading. This parallelogram is the seat of the office chair. During the shaping process, pay attention to making the corners of the parallelogram as regular as possible to ensure the aesthetics of the seat.
  • Make the chair legs: Take some more orange-colored clay and roll it into a thin strip. Then divide this thin strip evenly into three segments. Attach these three segments of clay to the underside of the seat as the three chair legs. Due to the perspective, the fourth chair leg will be hidden from view, so there is no need to make it. When attaching the chair legs, ensure that they are firmly connected to the seat and that the spacing between the three chair legs is even so that the chair can be placed steadily.
  • Make the backrest: Knead a thicker strip of orange-colored clay. Fold this strip into three segments to form a shape similar to a โ€œโˆชโ€. Then attach it to the top of the seat as the backrest of the chair. The shape of the backrest can be adjusted appropriately according to personal preference, but ensure that it is firmly connected to the seat.

Making a Handmade Swivel Chair

  • Prepare materials: Use pink-colored clay and also prepare auxiliary tools such as a small knife.
  • Make the swivel chair seat: Take out the pink-colored clay and roll it into a circle. Then flatten and spread it out. Use the small knife to cut this circular clay into a square. This is the seat of the swivel chair. When cutting, try to ensure that the side lengths of the square are equal to make the seat look regular.
  • Make the swivel chair armrests: Knead the pink-colored clay into a door-like shape. Use the small knife to cut a series of marks on it and connect them to simulate the texture of the armrests. Then, take some more pink-colored clay and roll it into four small strips. Attach them to both sides of the armrests as the support parts of the armrests.
  • Make the swivel chair backrest: Knead two small strips of pink-colored clay, flatten them, and attach them to the top of the seat as the bottom supports of the backrest. Then take some more pink-colored clay and knead it into three small strips and a small circle. Connect the three strips to the circle to form the upper structure of the backrest. Then, take some pink-colored clay and roll it into a cylindrical shape. Attach it to the upper part of the backrest to make the backrest more three-dimensional.
  • Assemble the swivel chair: Assemble the made parts. Connect the backrest to the seat firmly, and the handmade swivel chair is completed.
