How to Make Office Chairs Slide

Admin October 09, 2026

There are four ways to make office chairs slide, and the appropriate method should be selected based on the usage scenario and chair type:

1. Install casters This is suitable for fixed office chairs without casters. The appropriate wheel type should be selected according to the floor material. Nylon/rubber universal wheels (with a diameter of 3-5 cm) are a common choice. The load-bearing capacity should exceed 20% of the user's weight to ensure safety. During installation, remove the original fixed base, and use bolts to fix the casters with mounting plates to the bottom of the chair legs. Install one caster on each of the four legs, and a fifth caster can be added at the center point to enhance stability. If the chair legs are wooden, use a metal hoop to reinforce the mounting holes first to prevent cracking. This method is only suitable for smooth floors such as tiles or wooden floors. Rough concrete floors will cause excessive wear on the casters or make sliding difficult due to high friction.

2. Adopt a combination design of caster feet and adjustable fixed feet Some office chairs (such as high-end ergonomic chairs) use a hybrid structure of multiple casters + adjustable fixed feet. When moving, the fixed feet are raised through a pneumatic rod or mechanical structure, allowing the chair to be fully supported by the casters for easy sliding. When fixed, the fixed feet extend to touch the ground, bearing the main load and preventing slipping. At this time, although the casters still touch the ground, they only provide auxiliary support. This design balances mobility and stability, making it suitable for scenarios that require frequent position adjustments.

3. Use gravity self-locking (braked) universal casters These casters have a built-in mechanical braking device. When the chair's load reaches a preset threshold (usually about 40 kg), the braking mechanism automatically locks the wheels under the action of gravity to prevent sliding. When the user stands up and the weight is released, the brake automatically releases, allowing the chair to move freely. This method requires no manual operation, making it suitable for scenarios where the chair needs to be temporarily fixed (such as preventing the chair from sliding during office work). However, ensure the quality of the casters is reliable to avoid brake failure or excessive sensitivity, which can cause inconvenience.

4. Alternative mobility solutions

  • Slip pad solution: Stick felt pads or fix silicone sleeves to the bottom of the chair legs to achieve slight movement by reducing friction. This is only suitable for carpeted environments, and the effect is limited on smooth floors.
  • Mobile base grafting: Purchase a used swivel chair base (with an average price of 40-80 yuan) and install the original chair seat onto the new base using an adapter plate. Measure the original chair's dimensions in advance to ensure the adapter plate matches, preventing the chair from wobbling or tilting after installation. This method is relatively low-cost but requires some hands-on skills. Additionally, the height of the chair may change after grafting, and it needs to be adjusted to a comfortable position.
