Learn How to Make Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Making office chairs involves several steps, including base frame production, component exterior fabrication, upholstery stitching, and part assembly. Details are as follows:

Base Frame Production

First, workers place square steel tubes into a hydraulic press and bend them into square base frames with rounded corners. This step establishes the foundational support structure of the office chair. The rounded-corner design ensures both the stability of the frame and the avoidance of potential safety hazards from sharp edges. Next, the support steel plates are welded to the frame openings to enhance the frame's robustness. After that, S-shaped springs are hooked onto the frame, and three support rods are connected to the springs in opposite directions, completing the internal structure of the base. This internal design provides good elasticity and support for the office chair, enhancing user comfort.

Component Exterior Fabrication

The armrest interfaces and backrests of the chair are welded and polished in a manner similar to the base frame production to achieve a smooth and even surface. Then, the process of making the chair's exterior with black leather begins. Plastic templates for components such as headrests and armrests are placed on top of the leather, and a utility knife is used to cut out pieces of black leather according to the template patterns. These leather pieces will serve as the surface materials for wrapping the components.

Upholstery Stitching

After all the leather pieces are cut, they are adhered to a relatively hard foam cushion and trimmed to slightly larger sizes than the leather to create the seat and backrest parts of the office chair. To ensure comfort, a softer, fluffy foam cushion is used. It is first cut into a large square and then cut into connected, non-separated rectangles at measured intervals. After that, marks are made on the leather at the same intervals as the foam cushion, and the leather is pleated and stitched to form the basic shape of the seat back's leather surface. Then, the seat's leather and decorations are stitched together to enhance the seat's comfort and aesthetics.

Part Assembly

The metal frame is wrapped with foam cushioning, and the stitched upholstery is placed over it for decoration. The cover plates and frame are secured with screws. Adjustable height armrests, hydraulic rods, gas springs, and the seat's bottom support rods are joined together with the metal base to ensure the office chair can be freely adjusted in height. After that, the chair's wheels are installed at the bottom, and the headrest and armrests are inserted into their designated positions. Thus, a comfortable office chair is completed.
