How to Make an Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

The process of making an office chair involves multiple steps, and there are differences in production methods depending on the design. Here are some common production methods:

First Production Method: Assembly-Based

  1. Component Preparation: Workers first gather over 200 different components and deliver them to the assembly team. This is a fundamental step in the production process, ensuring that all components are available for smooth subsequent assembly.
  2. Base Assembly: Place the base upside down on a fixture. Install the casters into the leg posts and use a pneumatic press to secure the casters to the base, ensuring they are firmly attached for easy chair movement. Another team is responsible for installing the pneumatic cylinder that controls the chair's height adjustment onto the base, providing support for the chair's height adjustment function.
  3. Component Fixation: Workers use machines to firmly attach the pneumatic cylinder and the tilt mechanism to the base, creating a signature forward and backward tilt to fit the human body and enhance comfort. Bolt the crossbar to both sides of the tilt mechanism, thread the cables through the crossbar from the pneumatic cylinder and the tilt mechanism, and install the control lever in a naturally reachable position for easy user operation.
  4. Upper Part Installation: First, install the seat cushion. Fix two support devices called B-links to the bottom of the seat cushion, then attach the seat cushion and the backrest to the crossbar. Install the B-links onto the tilt mechanism to ensure the stability of the seat cushion and the backrest. Install three-dimensional armrests by screwing the armrest pads onto the armrest frames, then attaching the armrests to the crossbar and installing control levers to adjust the height and angle of the armrests to meet the needs of different users. Attach a Y-shaped lumbar support to the backrest, which can support the back and be adjusted to further enhance comfort.
  5. Packaging and Shipment: After all components are installed, the entire chair is packaged and shipped out.

Second Production Method: Processing and Welding-Based

  1. Base Cushion Production: Place square steel tubes into a hydraulic press and bend them into square base cushion frames with rounded corners. Weld the support steel plates to the open ends of the frames. Then, hook S-shaped springs onto the frames and connect three support steel bars to the springs in opposite directions to complete the internal structure of the base cushion, providing stable support for the chair.
  2. Component Welding and Polishing: Weld and polish the armrest interfaces and the backrest of the chair in a similar manner to ensure firm component connections and smooth surfaces.
  3. Leather Processing: Use black leather to make the exterior parts of the chair. Place plastic templates for parts such as the headrest and armrests on top of the leather and use a utility knife to cut out pieces of black leather according to the template patterns. Glue the leather onto relatively hard foam cushions and cut out slightly larger foam pads to make the seat cushion and backrest parts of the office chair. To ensure comfort, use softer, fluffy foam pads. First, cut them into large squares, then cut them along measured intervals into connected, non-separated rectangles. Mark the leather according to the same intervals as the foam pads and pleat-sew the leather to form the basic shape of the leather surface of the seat backrest.
  4. Surface Decoration: Sew the leather of the seat cushion and decorations together to increase the comfort and aesthetics of the seat. Wrap the metal frame surface with foam pads, then place the sewn leather cover over it for decoration. Fix the cover plate and the frame with screws.
  5. Overall Assembly: Connect the height-adjustable armrests, hydraulic rods, pneumatic rods, and the bottom support rods of the seat to the metal base to ensure that the office chair can be freely adjusted in height. Install the wheels of the seat at the bottom and insert the headrest and armrests into specific positions.
