How to Make a Simple Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

There are several ways to make a simple office chair:

I. 30-Yuan DIY Lambswool Office Chair

  1. Material Preparation: You will need lambswool fabric (1ร—1.6m, it is recommended to buy two pieces for extra cutting allowance), Velcro (2m), needle and thread, and scissors.
  2. Backrest Modification: Cut the lambswool fabric according to the size of the backrest. Sew it from the reverse side of the fabric into a โ€œbagโ€ shape. Turn it over and place it on the backrest, ensuring a snug fit without wrinkles.
  3. Seat Modification: When cutting the fabric for the seat, make it slightly larger (3-4cm) than the seat. After wrapping the seat, fold the excess fabric to the back of the chair and secure the edges with Velcro to ensure firmness.
  4. Detail Handling: Fold the excess fabric at the four corners of the seat neatly. Trim the excess and sew it with a needle and thread to prevent fraying or snagging.

II. DIY Corrugated Cardboard Seat

  1. Structural Design: Based on the mortise-and-tenon principle, cut tenons on the corrugated cardboard. The height of the tenons should be half the thickness of the cardboard (for example, two pieces of 1.2cm thick cardboard require 1.2cm deep grooves). Form a stable structure through cross-splicing.
  2. Size Reference: It is recommended that the seat part be 60cm (length) ร— 50cm (width) ร— 40cm (height), and the backrest part be 60cm (length) ร— 15cm (width) ร— 80cm (height). Adjustments can be made according to needs.
  3. Tenon Distribution: Cut a 1.2cm wide groove every 5.5cm, with a depth of half the height of the cardboard. Stack two pieces of cardboard and cross-splice them to enhance the load-bearing capacity.
  4. Materials and Optimization: Using discarded corrugated cardboard boxes can reduce costs. However, note that a seat depth of 50cm may be cramped for those who sit cross-legged, so it is recommended to increase it by 5-10cm. A backrest height of 80cm is relatively high, and 50-60cm is more comfortable. When adding soft furnishings, reserve the thickness of the cushion.

III. Simple Foldable Backrest Chair Made from Scrap Wood

  1. Main Frame: Prepare two main pillars. Fix them at the bottom with wooden planks and nail a crossbeam on top as the support frame for the backrest, forming the first set of main structures.
  2. Folding Function: If a folding design is required, install hinges or movable joints at the connection between the main pillars and the crossbeam to ensure smooth opening and closing and stable load-bearing.
  3. Reinforcement Treatment: Check whether all the nail joints are firm. If necessary, add triangular support plates at key positions to improve overall stability.

Precautions:

  • The lambswool chair requires regular cleaning of the fabric to avoid dust accumulation.
  • The corrugated cardboard chair should be kept away from humid environments to prevent deformation.
  • The wooden chair should have its edges sanded to avoid injury from burrs.
