How to Lower Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

There are several methods to lower office chairs, and you can choose the appropriate one based on the type of chair:

1. Button or Lever Adjustment
Many office chairs are equipped with a height adjustment function at the bottom, usually located near the wheels under the seat. To operate, maintain a seated position and use your foot or hand to locate the adjustment button (some are designed as levers). Press down or toggle the button to lower the chair. This method is suitable for basic adjustable chairs and is simple and straightforward, but be mindful of the pressure applied to avoid damaging the components.

2. Pneumatic Rod Pump Adjustment (Common in Pneumatic Chairs)
Pneumatic office chairs achieve height adjustment through an internal pneumatic rod. To adjust, repeatedly push the lever under the seat up and down (similar to a โ€œpumpingโ€ motion). The specific steps are as follows:

  • Sit firmly and use one hand to hold the edge of the seat for balance;
  • Use the other hand to locate the metal or plastic lever under the seat;
  • Continuously press down on the lever, and the seat will gradually descend;
  • Release the lever to lock the position once the desired height is reached.
    This method requires some physical effort but offers a wide adjustment range, making it suitable for scenarios requiring fine height adjustments.

3. Knob Rotation Adjustment
Some office chairs are equipped with a rotatable adjustment knob under or on the side of the seat to control the height. To operate:

  • Identify the direction of the knob (usually marked with โ€œโ†‘โ€ for up, โ€œโ†“โ€ for down, or arrow indicators);
  • Rotate the knob clockwise or counterclockwise (the specific direction varies by model), and the seat will descend accordingly;
  • Stop rotating once the appropriate height is reached, and the knob will automatically lock.
    This method offers high adjustment precision, but be mindful of the rotation range to avoid over-adjustment.

4. Lever Pull/Push Adjustment
Some models of office chairs use a lever-type control rod for height adjustment through pulling or pushing. There are two specific scenarios:

  • Pull the control rod to lower: Sit firmly and use one hand to pull up the control rod under the seat. The seat will descend slowly and automatically lock when released;
  • Push the control rod to lower: For some models, maintain a seated position and press down on the control rod, and the seat will descend with the pressure. Release it once the target height is reached.
    This method requires selecting the correct operation direction based on the chairโ€™s design to avoid misoperation that could cause the seat to rebound.

Precautions:

  • Ensure the chair is in a stable state before adjusting to avoid tilting or moving;
  • Avoid rapidly pressing the lever on pneumatic chairs to prevent damage to the pneumatic rod;
  • If the chair cannot be adjusted, check if the adjustment components are stuck or damaged, and contact after-sales service for repairs if necessary.
