How to Lower an Office Chair
Admin October 11, 2026
The method for lowering an office chair depends on the type of chair. Here are the common types and their adjustment steps:

1. Pneumatic Adjustment (Most Common Type)
- Steps:
- Sit steadily on the chair and locate the long lever-shaped height adjustment handle on the right side beneath the seat.
- Gently lift the handle upwards to release the locking mechanism of the pneumatic rod. At this point, rely on your body weight to slowly sink down, and the chair will descend as the pneumatic rod compresses.
- Release the handle when reaching the desired height. The internal valve of the pneumatic rod will close, and the height will be locked.
- Principle: The pneumatic rod is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. When the handle is lifted, the valve opens, and the gas is compressed, causing the chair to descend.
- Note: Avoid suddenly releasing the handle or applying excessive force during adjustment to prevent the chair from suddenly rising due to gas rebound.
2. Mechanical Adjustment (Screw/Rotary Type)
- Steps:
- Locate the adjustment knob/screw at the center or side of the chair base (for some models, you may need to lift the seat cover to see it).
- Rotate the knob clockwise (or unscrew the screw counterclockwise and then manually press down the seat) to gradually lower the height to the desired position.
- For models fixed with screws, tighten the screws again after adjustment to ensure the seat is stable.
- Applicable Scenarios: Old-fashioned office chairs or simple seats without pneumatic devices.
3. Inflatable Adjustment
- Steps:
- Locate the knob at the top of the gas rod (usually at the connection between the seat and the base), and rotate it clockwise to lower the chair height by releasing the internal gas.
- Features: The adjustment range is relatively small and is mostly used for fine-tuning the height.
4. Emergency Methods for Fixed Office Chairs
- Replacing the Gas Rod:
- If the chair cannot be adjusted due to an aged gas rod, you need to disassemble the old gas rod (press the snap ring or lubricate it and then pull it out) and install a new one (such as compliant products from the Korean brand SHS).
- Adding Adjustable Foot Pads:
- Suitable for chairs that are only a few millimeters to 1 centimeter higher than the ground. Adjust the height slightly by using threaded adjustable foot pads to make up for the gap between the seat and the ground.
General Precautions
- Force Control: Adjust the chair gently to avoid damaging the components due to violent operations.
- Ergonomic Standards: The final height should ensure that your feet are flat on the ground, your thighs are parallel to the ground, and your knees are at a 90-degree angle to reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting.
- Function Check: If the chair has no height adjustment function, first check whether there are hidden control levers or buttons beneath the seat or confirm whether it is a fixed-design model.
