How to Lower an Office Chair

Admin October 08, 2026

There are several methods to lower an office chair, which can be operated according to different types and designs:

  1. Adjust via hand-operated controls Some office chairs are equipped with pneumatic lift rods or mechanical control rods, usually located beneath the seat or on the side. For pneumatic models, first locate the control rod (some may require turning a knob to unlock), then gently pull up or pump the lever (repeatedly move it up and down), and the seat will descend slowly with the operation. It is recommended to move a few centimeters at a time during adjustment to avoid instability caused by rapid lifting and lowering. For mechanical control rods, you may need to turn the knob to the unlocked position and then control the height with the lever.

  2. Use the support rod handle or gas rod knob Many office chairs have adjustment handles on the support rod (the metal rod connecting the seat to the base). When operating, you need to sit on the chair or press down on the seat with your hand to provide pressure, and then lift the handle, and the seat will descend due to gravity. For inflatable office chairs, locate the knob at the top of the gas rod, turn it clockwise to lower the height and counterclockwise to raise it. Ensure even pressure on the seat during adjustment.

  3. Coordinate sitting posture with the adjuster When adjusting while sitting, first move your hips backward and locate the adjuster (usually a lever or button) beneath or on the side of the seat. For some models, you need to pull the adjuster upward forcefully to lower the seat; for others, you need to remain seated and gently flip the lever, and the chair will descend slowly due to gravity. If the chair is designed with a gravity-sensing function, you can lean forward to apply pressure while operating the adjuster to release the lock, and the seat will descend smoothly.

  4. Precise control with buttons or knobs High-end ergonomic chairs may be equipped with electric or precision mechanical control devices, such as side buttons or bottom knobs. Simply press the lowering button or turn the knob counterclockwise, and the seat will descend at a preset speed. These chairs usually support millimeter-level precision adjustment, suitable for scenarios with strict height requirements.

Precautions: Before adjustment, confirm the type of chair (pneumatic, mechanical, or inflatable) to avoid damage caused by excessive force. If the adjustment mechanism is stuck, check for foreign object blockages or lubricate the components. After long-term use, it is recommended to regularly check the sealing of the pneumatic rod to ensure safety.
