How to Lock an Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

The method for locking an office chair depends on specific needs and the type of chair, mainly divided into two categories: preventing movement and locking the backrest. Here are the specific operations:

I. Preventing the Office Chair from Being Used or Moved

If you need to fix the position of an office chair (such as preventing theft or random movement), you can use physical locks. There are three common solutions:

  1. Chain Lock Select a load-bearing and difficult-to-remove part (such as chair legs or armrest bases), wrap the chain around these structures, and then fasten the lock core. The advantage of a chain lock is its simple structure and low cost, but ensure that the chain length is sufficient to cover the target part and that the lock core is strong enough to prevent violent damage.
  2. Combination Padlock No key is required; it is unlocked by a preset digital password. When using it, clamp the lock onto the gap between the chair legs or the chair frame, suitable for scenarios that require frequent opening and closing (such as shared office areas). Be sure to choose a corrosion-resistant material to avoid the password dial malfunctioning due to long-term exposure to a humid environment.
  3. Flexible Cable Lock The main body is a metal cable with a covering layer, which is more flexible and can wrap around irregularly shaped chair parts (such as curved backrests). Its advantage lies in its wide applicability; it can not only fix the chair legs but also bind the chair to nearby fixed furniture (such as desk legs) to enhance anti-theft effects.

II. Locking the Backrest Angle

If you need to fix the tilt angle of the backrest (such as maintaining an upright or specific recline angle), you need to choose a method based on the chair's adjustment mechanism:

  1. Knob Adjustment Find a round knob under or on the side of the chair. Turning it clockwise increases the resistance of the backrest until it can no longer be turned, completing the locking. Turning it counterclockwise unlocks it and allows angle adjustment. This method is common in traditional office chairs; it is simple to operate, but be careful not to apply excessive force to avoid damaging the threads.
  2. Lever Adjustment Find a lever on the side or under the chair and move it to the โ€œlockโ€ position to fix the backrest. Some levers need to be adjusted to the target angle before locking, and unlocked by moving them back to the original position. This method is common in ergonomic chairs; it is intuitive to operate, but be sure to confirm the accurate position of the lever.
  3. Button Adjustment Some computer chairs are equipped with a dedicated button. Pressing the button locks the recline angle of the backrest. There are two specific operations:
    • Adjust to the target angle and then press the button directly to lock it;
    • Lean back to the target position, lightly press the button, and then lean back slightly more until you hear a โ€œclickโ€ sound, indicating successful locking. To unlock, usually press the button again or slightly lean forward on the backrest. This method offers high precision, but regularly check the button's elasticity to avoid malfunction due to wear.

Precautions: Read the chair's instruction manual before operation to confirm the type of adjustment mechanism; maintain body balance during adjustment to avoid falling due to sudden movement of the backrest; if the lock or adjustment parts are damaged, it is recommended to contact after-sales service for repair instead of disassembling it yourself.
