How to Lay Down an Office Chair in a Flat Position

Admin October 08, 2026

The operation to lay down an office chair in a flat position depends on the type of adjustment mechanism, which commonly includes button-type, lever-type, and knob-type. The specific steps are as follows:

I. Unlock the Backrest

  1. Button-type:
    • Locate the circular or square button on the side of the chair body (usually beneath the armrests or on both sides of the backrest). Press the button, and the backrest can then recline freely. Some buttons need to be continuously pressed to maintain the unlocked state; releasing the button may cause the backrest to automatically rebound or lock.
  2. Lever-type:
    • Pull the metal lever beneath the seat, and the backrest enters an adjustable state; or pull the adjustment lever horizontally outward. After hearing a 'click' unlocking sound, the backrest can recline. Some models require simultaneous pressing of the lever and the backrest for unlocking.
  3. Knob-type:
    • Rotate the knob on the side of the chair body (some with 'Lock/Unlock' markings) to the 'Unlock' position; or adjust the recline resistance by rotating the knob clockwise or counterclockwise. A looser knob makes reclining easier. When unlocking for reclining, it may be necessary to flip a separate lever (such as beneath the backrest) to complete the final unlocking.

II. Adjust the Recline Angle

  • Lean your back backward, using your body weight to push the backrest to recline. Some high-end models support segmented locking (such as at 100ยฐ, 120ยฐ, 150ยฐ). A 'click' sound indicates that the angle is fixed.
  • For daily office work, it is recommended to choose an approximately 110ยฐ slight recline angle, which is beneficial for lumbar decompression; for lunch break relaxation, angles between 110ยฐ and 130ยฐ are more comfortable, dispersing body pressure and reducing fatigue.

III. (Optional) Lock the Angle

  1. Button-type/Lever-type:
    • Release the button or lever, and the backrest automatically locks in the current position; or push the lever back inward to complete the locking.
  2. Knob-type:
    • Release the adjustment lever, and the backrest locks in the current position; some models require resetting the adjustment lever (such as pushing it back into place or rotating it to a specific marking) to fix the angle.

Precautions:

  • Before operation, confirm that the chair supports the flat-lying function to avoid damage caused by forced reclining.
  • Maintain body balance during adjustment to avoid sudden force that may cause tipping.
  • If the chair is equipped with a headrest or footrest, adjust them simultaneously to match the recline angle and enhance comfort.
