How to Knock on Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The disassembly of office chairs by knocking requires step-by-step operations, combining tools and techniques to gradually loosen components. The specific methods are as follows:

I. Basic Operations: Invert the Chair and Perform Initial Knocking

Invert the office chair onto a flat surface to ensure sufficient operating space. For the connection between the base and the gas lift, use a rubber mallet or wooden hammer to lightly strike horizontally along the edge of the metal ring, or knock evenly in a circular motion. The purpose of knocking is to loosen components that have been tightly fitted for a long time through vibration. Avoid using an iron hammer directly to prevent deformation of metal components or damage to the paint surface. If the connection is severely rusted, first spray WD-40 lubricant or apply a small amount of cooking oil, and let it sit for 1-2 hours before knocking. The lubricant can penetrate the gaps and reduce friction.

II. Targeted Handling of Different Parts

  1. Base Disassembly
If directly pulling out the base is ineffective, use a rubber mallet to strike forcefully along the edge of the bottom steel ring in a circular motion, allowing the vibration to transmit to the internal snap-fit structure. After knocking, try to pry the base. If it is not loose, repeat the "knock-pry" action. Avoid continuous knocking at the same position to prevent deformation of the steel ring.

  2. Gas Lift Disassembly
The connection between the gas lift and the chassis is a difficult point for disassembly. Use an iron hammer to knock in a circular motion around the edge of the connection, or place a piece of wood and then knock on the center of the gas lift (the wood can disperse the impact force and protect the surface of the gas lift). If the gas lift is rusted and stuck, lubricate it first and then knock. If necessary, insert a screwdriver into the connection gap and use a hammer to pry downward to assist in separating the components.

III. Handling of Special Cases

  • Self-locking Gas Lift: If there is a self-locking screw at the bottom of the gas lift, first use an Allen wrench to unscrew the screw, release the limit of the snap ring, and then knock.
  • Long-term Unmaintained Components: When rust and adhesion are severe, alternately use lubricant penetration and mechanical vibration (such as knocking and prying) multiple times to gradually restore the mobility of the components.

IV. Safety Precautions

  1. Protective Measures: Wear protective gloves and goggles before operating to prevent metal debris from flying and causing injury.
  2. Tool Selection: Prioritize the use of soft tools such as rubber mallets and wooden hammers to reduce the risk of component damage. An iron hammer should only be used for severely rusted or stuck parts, and a piece of wood should be used as a buffer.
  3. Force Control: The knocking force should be moderate, with the principle of loosening the components without deformation. Avoid excessive force that may damage the internal structure of the gas lift.

By following the above steps, you can systematically complete the knocking disassembly of an office chair. If the components still cannot be separated, it is recommended to contact a professional repair person to avoid more serious damage caused by improper operation.
