How to Keep an Office Chair Stationary

Admin October 11, 2026

If you want to keep your office chair stationary and prevent it from rotating, you can prepare two items to connect the support frame and the chair (such as hemp ropes or steel cables) as well as anti-slip mats, and attach them to prevent the chair from moving. If the office chair itself has a malfunction that prevents it from moving, there may be the following reasons and solutions:

Wheel Issues

  • Wheels stuck with foreign objects: During daily use, the wheels of an office chair can easily get stuck with foreign objects such as paper scraps, hair, or threads, preventing them from rotating normally. In this case, carefully clean the debris around the wheels. You can use tweezers or other tools to remove the foreign objects and ensure the wheels can rotate freely.
  • Damaged wheels: If the rubber part of the wheels is severely worn or cracked, it will affect their rolling performance. In this situation, you need to replace the wheels with new ones. When replacing, make sure to choose a model with the same specifications as the original wheels to ensure installation compatibility.
  • Loose or rusty wheel axles: A loose wheel axle will make the wheels rotate inflexibly, while rust will increase friction and make the wheels difficult to rotate. For a loose axle, tighten the screws to secure it. For a rusty axle, use a rust remover to remove the rust and then drip an appropriate amount of lubricating oil to reduce friction and make the wheels rotate smoothly.
  • Floor issues: If the floor where the chair is placed is uneven or has excessive friction, it will also affect the movement of the wheels. You can adjust the position of the chair and move it to a flatter and smoother floor to reduce the resistance to wheel movement.
  • Excessive dust and dirt accumulation on the wheel surface: After long-term use, dust and dirt will accumulate on the wheel surface, increasing friction. Regularly clean the wheels. You can use a damp cloth to wipe the wheel surface and remove dust and dirt.

Axle Issues

A lack of oil inside the axle will cause poor rotation and affect the movement of the office chair. You can add an appropriate amount of lubricating oil to make the axle rotate flexibly. When adding lubricating oil, be careful not to add too much to avoid oil overflow and contamination of the floor or clothing.

Connecting Component Issues

Loose connecting components are also one of the common reasons why an office chair cannot move. Carefully check each screw and other connecting parts, and tighten the loose parts to ensure that all components of the office chair are firmly connected.

Gas Cylinder Issues

Problems with the gas cylinder can also affect the rotation of the swivel chair. If the gas cylinder is bent or deformed, you may need to contact a professional repair person or replace it with a new one.
