How to Inflate an Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

Pneumatic office chairs generally cannot be inflated by users themselves. If inflation is required, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician, as self-operation may pose safety risks.

Common Adjustment Methods for Pneumatic Office Chairs

Currently, most office chairs on the market use a pneumatic lift structure, with the core component being a pneumatic rod (gas spring), which achieves height adjustment through internal high-pressure gas. These chairs generally do not require users to inflate them themselves; instead, height adjustment or gas release is achieved through the following methods:

  1. Direct Gas Release Adjustment: Some chairs have a small circular or square button at the bottom (usually made of plastic). Pressing this button releases the gas inside the pneumatic rod, lowering the chair's height. When operating, maintain a sitting position and use your body weight to assist in compressing the gas.
  2. Tool-Assisted Gas Release: If the chair does not have a direct gas release button, look for the adjustment hole at the bottom of the pneumatic rod (usually requires bending over to observe). Insert an Allen wrench into the hole and turn it counterclockwise slowly to release the gas. This method requires controlling the force to avoid the chair suddenly dropping due to rapid gas release.
  3. Lever Adjustment for Height: Most pneumatic chairs are equipped with a lift lever (located on the right side under the seat). To raise the chair: With no one sitting on it, pull the lever upward, and the pneumatic rod will extend, lifting the chair. To lower the chair: Maintain a sitting position and pull the lever upward, allowing your body weight to compress the pneumatic rod and lower the chair.

Why Can't You Inflate It Yourself?

The interior of the pneumatic rod is a sealed high-pressure environment (with pressures reaching several megapascals). Inflation requires professional equipment (such as a high-pressure air pump) and safety precautions. Non-professional operation may lead to:

  • Pneumatic Rod Burst: Imbalanced internal pressure may cause an explosion, resulting in personal injury.
  • Seal Failure: Improper inflation can damage the sealing structure, rendering the chair unusable.
  • Height Control Issues: Inaccurate inflation amounts may cause abnormal chair height, affecting the user experience.

Correct Handling Method

If the chair's height is insufficient or you suspect a gas leak, prioritize contacting the manufacturer's after-sales service or a professional repair technician. They have the professional tools and experience to safely inspect the pneumatic rod's condition and replace qualified parts if necessary. During daily use, avoid scratching the surface of the pneumatic rod with sharp objects and regularly check whether the chair's lift function is normal to extend its service life.
