How to Handle Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

To adjust the height of an office chair, different methods should be used depending on the type of chair; to lift and move an entire office chair, follow specific steps.

Adjusting the Height of an Office Chair

  • Conventional Lever-Type Office Chairs: Locate the handle on the support rod, usually positioned on the right or left side of the support rod beneath the chair's seat cushion. To lower the height, sit directly on the chair and use your body weight to press down, or press evenly on the edge of the seat cushion with your palm to ensure the chair remains stable without wobbling. While maintaining the downward pressure, use your other hand to lift the handle upwards, and the chair will slowly descend. Once adjusted to the desired height, release the handle to secure it in place. To raise the height, perform the operation in reverse; the chair will rise when the handle is lifted.
  • Pneumatic Office Chairs: Find the gas rod knob, typically located at the top of the gas rod in the center of the chair's base, which may be covered by a dust cover that needs to be lifted first. Turning it clockwise lowers the height, while turning it counterclockwise raises it. Some chairs can also adjust the backrest direction through rotation.

Lifting and Moving an Entire Office Chair

Generally, follow the manufacturer's instructions for the chair. Typically, locate two crossed ropes at the bottom of the chair, which are key ropes used to support and move the chair. Gently try to find their positions by placing one foot on the seat. Hold the middle of the armrests or the backrest (or the crossbar above the chair) with both hands to maintain stability and balance, and determine how to apply force correctly to lift the chair without tilting or rolling it. Concentrate your strength to pull up the two ropes at the bottom; usually, only a slight effort is needed to easily lift it to the desired height. After the chair is lifted, double-check to ensure the center of gravity of the entire chair is stabilized to avoid accidental slipping.
