How to Disassemble Office Chairs
Admin October 11, 2026
The disassembly of office chairs requires selecting the appropriate method based on their specific structure and type. The general steps are as follows:

I. General Disassembly Steps
Prepare Tools
You will need a Phillips screwdriver, a flat-head screwdriver, an Allen wrench, a rubber mallet, and for some chairs, a small drill bit or rust remover. The rubber mallet prevents damage to components during tapping, and the rust remover is used for stuck screws or snap rings.Separate the Seat and Backrest
- If the backrest is connected to the seat with screws, locate the fixing screws at the junction (usually under the backrest) and unscrew them with the corresponding screwdriver.
- If it is an integrated backrest (such as a simple style without an independent backrest), this step is not required.
Remove the Armrests
- Armrests are often fixed to the sides of the seat with screws. Unscrew them and remove the armrests.
- Some armrests have plastic covers hiding the screws. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the covers before operating.
Separate the Gas Cylinder and Base
- Turn the chair upside down and locate the connection between the gas cylinder and the base (which may be fixed with a snap ring or screws).
- Use an Allen wrench to loosen the screws or a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the snap ring. Gently tap the connection to separate the gas cylinder from the base.
- If the gas cylinder is stuck due to long-term use, apply lubricating oil and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before attempting to separate it.
Remove the Casters
- Casters are usually directly snapped onto the caster sockets on the base. Hold the caster with your hand and pull it outward, or use a flat-head screwdriver to pry at the edge to detach it.
Separate the Base from the Chair Body
- Unscrew the fixing screws on the base (usually located at the center or edges of the base) to separate the chair base from the upper part.
- If further disassembly is required, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the connection between the wheels and the chair to detach the wheels from the base.
II. Disassembly of Special Types
- Folding Chairs: The connections are often hidden in the folding seams. Unscrew them or use a small drill bit to drill off the rivet heads (if riveted).
- Solid Wood Dining Chairs (Assembled Type): The connections are made with screws and wooden dowels. First, unscrew the screws, then use a rubber mallet to gently tap the mating surfaces of the wooden dowels to separate them.
- Chairs with Electrical Components (such as Massage Chairs): Always unplug the power source first. Avoid the motor and wiring parts during disassembly to prevent breaking the wires, which could cause short circuits or damage the circuit.
III. Precautions
- Safety First
- Avoid pulling hard or tapping the central shaft of the gas cylinder during disassembly to prevent it from suddenly popping out and causing injury.
- It is recommended to wear gloves during operation to prevent scratches from screws or metal parts.
- Component Storage
- Store the removed screws, snap rings, and small parts in a small box or sealed bag to prevent loss, which could make reassembly difficult.
- Record Connection Methods
- Take photos with your phone before disassembly to record the positions and connection methods of each component for easy reference during reassembly.
- Professional Assistance
- If you encounter snap rings or screws that cannot be removed (such as those severely rusted or with complex designs), it is advisable to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair person for handling to avoid damaging the components through violent disassembly.
