How to Disassemble an Office Chair
Admin October 13, 2026
Disassembling an office chair requires careful handling, especially since the connection between the gas cylinder and the chair base may be tightly fastened due to long-term use. It is not recommended to disassemble unless absolutely necessary. If you need to proceed, follow the steps below:

I. Separation of the Seat and Gas Cylinder
- Detach the Backrest: If the backrest is detachable, separate it from the seat first. Some backrests are secured with screws; use a screwdriver of the corresponding size and turn it counterclockwise to loosen. If it is a snap-fit design, locate the snap positions and gently pry them open with a flat-head screwdriver or plastic pry tool.
- Adjust the Gas Lift to the Highest Position: Press the height adjustment lever to raise the gas lift to its highest position, ensuring maximum separation between the seat and the gas cylinder. This step reduces resistance during subsequent shaking.
- Remove the Seat:
- Standard Operation: Hold the bottom of the seat firmly with one hand and press the height adjustment lever (usually located on the right side of the seat) with the other hand while shaking the seat left and right. Gradually increase the shaking amplitude to use inertia to separate the gas cylinder from the seat.
- User Optimization Tip: Press the height adjustment lever downward and backward (thread your arm under the seat, bend your elbow, and pull the lever backward) while supporting the bottom of the seat with your forearm. This posture increases leverage and, combined with up-and-down shaking, allows for quicker removal of the seat.
II. Separation of the Gas Cylinder and Chair Base
- Invert the Chair Base: Place the chair base upside down on a flat surface or workbench, ensuring the gas cylinder is pointing straight up. This position prevents the base from sliding during disassembly and uses gravity to assist in separation.
- Tap for Separation:
- Recommended Tool: Use a rubber mallet to tap evenly along the connection between the gas cylinder and the chair base. The elasticity of the rubber mallet reduces damage to the components and prevents deformation caused by direct tapping with a metal hammer.
- Alternative Method: If a rubber mallet is not available, place a flat piece of wood (about 1-2 cm thick) on top of the gas cylinder and tap the wood lightly with a regular hammer. The wood disperses the impact force and prevents indentation on the top of the gas cylinder.
- Tapping Tips: Start tapping from the edge of the contact surface between the gas cylinder and the chair base, moving clockwise or counterclockwise gradually. Avoid focusing on one point to prevent jamming. Tap with moderate force until the components loosen slightly.
III. Disassembly of Other Parts
If you need to disassemble components such as armrests or headrests, usually follow the reverse order of installation:
- Locate the fixing screws (mostly found at the connections between the components and the seat/backrest) and loosen them by turning counterclockwise with the corresponding screwdriver.
- If the components are secured with snaps, gently pry the edges of the snaps with a plastic pry tool while slowly pulling the components outward to avoid breaking the snaps due to excessive force.
Precautions:
- Wear protective gloves before disassembly to prevent finger injuries from metal components.
- If the gas cylinder and chair base cannot be separated after a long time, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for handling. Forcing disassembly may cause the gas cylinder to explode (due to the high-pressure gas inside).
- After disassembly, keep small components such as screws and snaps properly to avoid loss and ensure smooth reassembly later.
